Rygar update: Argus, graphics and Wii controls

Thursday, September 27th, 2007 at 10:43am by Jack

Rygar WiI both loved and hated the original Rygar. I played it on a friends’ NES a lot, and we usually ended up screaming at the TV because, as any gamer knows, cussing out a television actually affects gameplay and allows you to beat final bosses. It was also pretty enjoyable nevertheless.

And now there’s a “new” Rygar coming to Wii. I use quotes because it’s actually the 2002 Playstation 2 game with tacked on Wii controls. Or so I thought until today. 1up — yup, that 1up — has a preview up today that fleshes out a bit what Tecmo has planned for this remake. Yes, I said remake, as in the Wii Trauma Center kind of remake, because there are some fundamental changes to the game that are worth a mention.

Aeropause (again!):

This game features a newly-designed avatar, all new enemies to replace the poorly-received enemies in the PS2 version, fully Wii-rebuilt controls, and next up in the development process is improving the visuals to match the capabilities of the Wii, something that will definitely have to be watched closely.

The interview is a good read, with a lot more info than I’m putting here of course, and I recommend it. The hard questions are asked, to the point where the responses almost seem to reflect the interviewee having taking offense. The most interesting thing in the interview is how the developer says they’re intentionally trying to make it so you need to use full motions to execute the moves in the game, so it will actually be physically taxing to play. This is exactly what everyone feared Wii games would be like before launch, and ironically, what some of us are finding is an aspect of the most fun games on the system, simply because the player becomes so much more involved in the game.

I still don’t mind getting up to play a Wii game. It’s almost a year old now, but Wii Sports will still see me making exaggerated movements in tennis or bowling (slide that back foot!). That’s just me though. Is a physically taxing, yet PS2-based Rygar worth the effort?

Yes, this game is absolutely worth the effort. This game is right up, and directly down the center of my alley, and I couldn’t be more thrilled.

Part of my enjoyment with Metroid Prime 3 is how exhausting it is to play. No so much because I am physically flailing my arms around for hours (although some intense boss fights usually result in just such exhurtion), but simply becuase it is so immersive. After a three hour session, I feel physically and emotionally drained, as if I really was running through corridors on alien planets blasting monsters.

Isn’t that why we play videogames? To experience something we cannot experience in real life? Isn’t the process of making that experience more immersive the whole point of Wii? Swinging that enormous, heavy DiskArmor would certainly be physically taxing in real life. Shouldn’t the virtual version replicate that feeling as much as possible? I think so.

from the interview this game sounds cool. yet another game to drain my wallet

How many of you play Metroid Prime 3 standing up, by the way? I can’t play it sitting down, as much as I’ve tried doing that!

I have no problem playing a remake or even a good port of a PS2 game on Wii as long as the Wii controls are well implemented…

Any game that gets you involved more is better.. I’m sick of developers making Wii games control as normal but with some waggling here or there.. that crap just makes the game LESS fun than using a traditional controller.

I can’t even fathom playing Prime 3 standing up. I’m not a standing gamer unless the game absolutely requires it.

Is not worth the effort for me, and when will developers stop porting old PS2 games to Wii ? I thought there was going to be a new RYGAR with a new story line and taking advantage of the Wii’s engine..

I still have my PS2 and I didnt spend $250 to playback PS2 games with a remote attached..
The PS2 will have motion sensing for the holidays and it makes more sense for tecmo to re-released for the same system..

If we stop buying ports I’ll bet developers will stop making them with exceptions of AAA titles like RE4 will always be welcome but any less..

I’m just frustrated over the infestation of ported games the Wii has, I think is enough already.

FWIW, BlockSS, there will probably be more effort put into the Rygar port simply because I seriously doubt this is a money grab. It’s not like Rygar is a hugely popular franchise. The first Rygar, which was a solid PS2 game, very decent, hit the budget bin almost immediately.

No, I think this game is being made because someone at Tecmo thinks they can make a good game, not because they want to make a quick dollar.

I love standing up for a Wii games.. especially for Zelda bosses. Crank-up the stereo system, and turn out the lights, and the experience can be pretty intense!

The only game I ever played standing up, mini-game aside, was Red Steel, and only for the sword duels.

I would be shooting through levels, arrive at duel scene, get up from my rocking chair, and get ready to throw down. Very epic feeling.

I am surprised that this game is turning out well. When I heard a 2002 PS2 title was being ported to the Wii, I looked the other way immedietly.

Also, Tecmo is bringing Final Frame 3 to the Wii, which is good to hear.

  11. Mune says...

I plan on getting it. Glad to hear that the movements will be “physically taxing”.

  12. Abras says...

@Mune, Agreed. I have to work off all that ass fat I got from playing MP3 :D It’s a great game and all, but I couldn’t possibly fathom playing it all the way through standing up.

  13. DeathChronx says...

I loved the game for Ps2, and I’m really excited that they are completely remaking the game for the Wii. Sweet! ^_^

  14. AC says...

sounds promising…i’ll wait for reviews. if this game makes me tired from swinging i’m all for it. i guess i’m not the typical gamer where i don’t want to move. i do stand up for some games, but it really depends. i stand when playing wii tennis, but thus far only sit for metroid prime 3.
