Nine months ago today, we asked you which control scheme you thought you would use for Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Now that the game is out, we ask again:
Which Super Smash Bros. Brawl control scheme do you prefer?

You don’t vote….

Wavebird for me.

I really prefer Wiimote+nunchuck, but I had to make a few adjustments:
c= Shield
Z= Jump
D-pad= taunts
1= grab
Though I am probably going to go ahead and make Dpad-Down grab again and 1=down taunt.
I don’t get why people find this unusable. I would much prefer the analog stick to just the d-pad and the analog stick works great on the nunchuck. And I have Shake-smash turned on as well.. I like using that sometimes when I want to quickly smash someone in a direction (though I wish you could adjust sensitivity)

Game Cube for me.
It wold be no contest, though, if the Classic Controller would actually let you use the D-pad to move around. That and Sonic in the SSE are probably my two biggest let downs so far.

I think Wii remote sideways is exactly what this game needed. Something about Smash Bros… I dont know, I always felt like there were too many buttons or something. My only complaint (and it’s a big one) is that running should be default, not requiring a double tap.

haven’t played yet- but prob better with the cube controller. think i’d force myself to use the nunchuck just cause its a different experience though.

I prefer the gc/wavebird option myself but tried the remote + chuck option tonight and that isn’t as bad as i though it would be, got used to it and could deal with it if I had four over to play, since i only have three gc pads. remote only not the one for me, and no classics here so I can’t try it out yet

dubnobass…: That’s what you get when you sacrifice using analog control. I don’t see why some people like using the d-pad more. The sensitivity of the analog stick makes moving so much more quick and intuitive.

I told myself I would try and get used to the Classic Controller setup (I had to modify the buttons a bit, though). In the end, however, I couldn’t help but go back to the cube controller. It’s just perfect for Smash!
Also, I didn’t like the Wiimote alone. It was too bare for these bones. I could see how more casual/non-gaming players might like it, though. It is a lot simpler to grasp. If you’ve never played Smash before, I’m sure you’ll love that method of playing.

neko: I think the D-pad is better for Smash because it gives you more precise timing.
In Melee, sometimes I would try to do a Smash move, but the timing would be slightly off, and I’d end up doing a normal attack instead.
eh.. Maybe it’s just me.

YAY!!!!!!…lets buy a game for the wii, and use a crappy gamecube controller to make it work…THAT’S innovation….god i hate this

I actually like using the Classic Controller, yet I have not tried the Wiimote/Nunchuk route.

I don’t have it yet so I can’t really vote, but I can see myself using the classic controller or the wavebird. I still play melee like, a LOT, so for me, Brawl will just be a graphical update, feature addon with new characters and stages.
So yeah, I’ll want to keep it all as pure smash bros. as possible.

Wavebird. Wish I could find a second one.
The many controller options are great. Seems like everyone has a different preference. Brawl was blasted for not supporting the revolutionary motion controls of Wii. But I’d rather have options than shoe-horned motion controls into a game that doesn’t benefit from them.
Motion control is not the revolution. Simplified controls that allow anyone to play is the revolution. Brawl gives the option for newbies and veterans to play together. That’s the revolution.

-I actually don’t mind the wiimote but for more advanced play it just isn’t enough. Also, those buttons will KILL my thumbs after continuous use unlike the other schemes.
-The nunchuck combo seems to me like it might be better for newbies as being able to shake the wiimote to smash in that direction feels nice and intuitive for the most part.
-Gamecube has the best button layout and comfort for me. Using the C-stick for directed attacks is simpler than the others I’ve used and it just has enough buttons for everything.
-Haven’t tried the classic as I don’t have one but I’m sure it feels pretty good.
It’s nice to see a game be able to pull off such a large controller scheme and do it right. I wonder if we’ll ever see any other game with so many options (and not screw things up).
My vote: GC

GameCube controller. I’m too use to Melee and Brawl plays pretty much the same. I would play the Classic controller, but lack of rumble really makes it feel empty. I want to feel the impact of punching someone in the face.

I started with my gamecube controller, but soon found out that it had problems with the analog stick (kept making me walk left no matter what I did). I use the wiimote and nunchuck. A is my attack, B is my special, down is my jump, up/left/right/2 are my taunts, and c and z are my shields. I’m thinking about making C grab, but pressing a +b at the same time is working great for me. I also use the wiimotes motion like it’s the c-stick. That’s something I anticipated before they even announced it and I like it!
C.Falcon ftw.

I use the Gamecube controller cause ultimately it just feels more intuitive to me having played a fair share of Melee. It feels kinda lame using a gamecube controller on what’s supposed to be the most advanced Wii game yet (and the complete lack of pointer controls on the menu just seems… odd), but ultimately it’s nice that they offer so many options. There’s a simplistic wiimote style, the wiimote and nunchuck for analog junkies, classic controler for people who like traditional style but don’t have a gamecube controler, and a gamecube controler… Not to mention everything’s programable. It’s not always about utilizing all your technology, it’s just about doing it right. I think some people just got over-hyped. Brawl is better than Melee in most areas but it’s still basically the same game. If you’re happy with Melee, stay with Melee, but I’ve been VERY happy with Brawl (even with my online issues).

Gametaku… if you’re using a wavebird and having that issue, it may have something to do with your analog stick being off-center when the switch is turned on. It has to be centered to calibrate it. It’s an easy fix, just switch the wavebird back off and then on again. Works for me… but I may be saying the obvious and the problem is more complex.

I was really leary about the mote-chuck combo, but I’ve been playing with it and it’s working really well (a=attack, b=special, z=jump, c=shield, down/a+b=grab, up/left/right/2=taunt), I think I like it because you don’t really have to move your fingers AT ALL unless you’re taunting, which just brings back memories of having to slap the far left trigger on the N64 controller :). The wiimote is just too bare for my tastes and I don’t have a classic controller, but I’m sure it would be fine. The GC would be great too, but I’m also lazy and don’t want to have to load the game with the wiimote and then pick up a different controller!
mote-chuck and Ness ftw!
