Every Mii has a Friend Code

Tuesday, May 29th, 2007 at 9:44am by Jack

p42.gifA French interview meticulously analyzed by 4cr reveals the Friend Code mystery, such as it is, has grown ever deeper.

G – And what about the Mii-specific codes?

Each Mii created generates a Mii code which never changes. This code will be used for all online games in the future.

Now, this doesn’t mean that Nintendo will retain a list of your friends from game to game – instead, specific Miis are assigned unique, permanent friend codes that will be used universally. It isn’t Xbox Live, but hey, just months ago, people were ready to go wading with their Wiis. It’s a lot better than we were expecting, right?

At this point, with all of the delicious misdirection coming from Nintendo (which they can do as king of the hill, right Reggie?), I have no frackin’ clue what the heck the Friend Code situation is going to be when the first batch of online Wii games drops in the very near future. Perhaps some of our European readers can keep us abreast of these kinds of developments as Strikers draws near.

Draws near? Is it not already released in Europe?

Draws near in America. The game has already been released in Europe.

This just confirms even more my theory that Nintendo just doesn’t quite understand online gaming: the set of rules can’t be THAT complicated, can it?? So why does Nintendo keep switching the rules on every interview? The reason might simply be this: each game developer (and not just 3rd party developers!) must be given freedom to develop the security system they want. So, ONE of the games must be creating a separate account for each Mii (just like in the “Everybody Votes!” channel), others will use only the Wii Friend Code, and some others will generate an exclusive friend code for the game, if you combine all the different rumors we’ve been getting…

And Sykil is absolutely right: Mario Strikers is already running online in Europe! Why can’t anyone over there send us a comment or an e-mail to tell us finally how online play works??

    Anyone? Hello?

Let’s see, we now have….a 16-digit Wii friend code + game-specific friend codes, and now Mii-specific friend codes? That’s a lot of random numerical digits to input into my Wii.

I doubt we have to “input” Mii codes. I would think that your exchanged Miis will serve as your friends list. This also gets around the console vs. household member code distinction. You exchange codes with Wiis then you can exchange Miis from each of those Wiis for the friends list. This is the way you get a friends list. If you just want to jump in and play you get anonymous play like MS:Charged uses in the ranked matches.

You get up close and personal contact with the people that you know and sanitized play with strangers. Sounds workable and removes the “XBL cesspool” syndrome.

Althought I’m very excited at the prospect of Mii-specific universal firends codes, the fact that this is a translated statement makes me think the guy only refers to Mario Football when he says “all online games in the future”, not all future online Wii titles…
