Wii’s Opera Browser has Flash vulnerability

Tuesday, July 24th, 2007 at 8:57am by David

operalogo.jpgAccording to a recent PC World article, the version of Flash included with the Opera-powered Internet Channel
on Wii is vulnerable to an odd video attack.

Nintendo Wii consoles that run the exploit completely freeze up while browsing a specially crafted video, said Symantec. Videos of the different effects of the bug on different platforms can be found on YouTube.

Should we expect an update from Opera and Nintendo soon?

It’s not news to me. TV Squad has a daily video blog that’s run through a flash based service called UnCut, and watching those videos always locks up my Wii. Every time. It’s frustrating, and I really wish Opera would put a proper version of Flash on the browser.

This is interesting news. Hopefully it’ll force Nintendo/Opera to upgrade the current version of Flash player already inbuilt in the browser.

If that happens I’d be more interested in creating Wii specific websites

As I understand it, Opera has limited control over the version of Flash that’s inbuilt in the browser.

It’s due to Flash 7 being the latest version available from Adobe for licensing, and there’s little Opera can do about it. Flash 9 on this platform would not be supported by Adobe.

I would use the Wii browser more often if it supports an upgraded flash version other than flash 7, what else other than youtube can u watch? I mean , I can’t even watch gametrailers.com

I’ve had this problem too; and it also just happened to be on Youtube. Hopefully we will get an update to the channel that not only fixes the problem, but gives us Flash 8; or better yet, Flash 9.
