The latest chart from VG Chartz shows us that Wii has outsold the Xbox 360 and PS3, worldwide. While that’s exciting and a little earlier than expected, the real point of interest is that Wii has sold nearly as many units in the Americas as the PS3 has worldwide. What should Sony learn from the current state of their console sales?

Interesting. Not a while ago, Microsoft was touting its 10 million units worldwide.

  2. Craigo says...

When MS was boasting of “10 million units” it was units shipped, not sold to consumers. VGChartz tracks the latter.

now the fanboys say that it doesn’t matter how many consoles you sell but how many games per console you sell. idiots… lol

I was thinking about that today, rokerovakero, as I listened to Infendo Radio. Kyle was saying that he thinks Nintendo is withholding Wii units to drive demand. Does that make sense, though, since they’re missing out on software sales to people who can’t get the console?

Regardless, Wii now has a larger user base around the world than the 360, so I guess whatever they’re doing is working!!

That just means we have to buy more games…

…or they may also say; “Since when does marketshare matter anyways!”

    Three cheers for Nintendo

There’s a typo in your headline. It should read “Wii overtakes Xbox 360 in the fever dreams of a website ending in a Z.”

I mean, I’m in the Wii camp too but come on, it’s a site called “VGChartZ”. If the name weren’t off-putting enough, the fact that they’ve been around for like 4 months and pull “sales figures” out of thin air should be. I’ll wait for NPD before I start busting out the champagne.

    @ raindog:

The’ve been very accurate in salles since they started. They’ve been spot on since Nintendo announced a million Wiis all the way till last month when Nintendo announced 8 million as of July(?).

It’s amazing to see the turnaround from last generation. Sony and Nintendo switch places and Microsoft remain in the middle.

vgchartz or another website like it has been around for more then 4 months, at least the person running it has been. we dont know where he gets the numbers from, but it has been fairly reliable, but its not as official as MC create/NPD charts and europe rarely gives out hardware numbers, so thats always a guess.

nepgaf i believe has wii outpacing 360 next month, and thats what i will go by, and its fine by me.
canada numbers just recently came in, wii beat ps3 4-1 and 360 about 8-1, america numbers come out thursday.
japanese numers give a good steady 240k over 360 monthly, its inevitable.

go search neogaf, this week for the wii 360 takeover thread where better analysis of worldwide numbers is given.

still, in the end, vgchartz isnt a bad site to use for past data, as it continuously updates its charts as new data comes out. so say, for software sales, up to recent console sales, its as accurate as necessary for internet use. like the wii weather channel, not effective for seeing the weather at the minute, but great for seeing how it will be tomorrow and days after

I’m surprised to see how well the PS3 is selling, actually. Considering the price, lack of games current and future, and the quality of the xbox live experience, the dismal PSP support, etc - I’m very surprised. Sony now has the ability to catch XBOX if they can rekindle their software support and if bluray catches on. I don’t consider the Wii in the same category as the PS3 and 360. That would be like comparing porsche to volkswagon GTI. VW sells a crapload more cars, and to their owners, they’re a ton of fun. Meanwhile, most people won’t deny the quality of a porsche.

That doesn’t take anything away from their obvious success at rebounding from the failing popularity of the cube. This is a great system and Nintendo has proven they are the most innovative company - and may someday be credited with saving the industry.

many gaming sites didn’t predict the wii outpacing the 360 until next year if at all. wow, i guess the wii will just die any second now right? flush that idea down the drain. the wii is here to stay.

What blows my mind is that Wii is outselling the competition despite manufacturing issues… I wonder what the sales figures would be if Nintendo could churn out as many units as needed to satisfy the demand??

  14. dlindema says...

    @Invisible - yeah, I had wondered the same thing a while back…

Even though I own a Wii I still feel bad for those who want one yet cannot locate one. I have helped two of my friends track down sunday stockpiles at both Target and Best Buy (yes that means in total I have waited for Wii’s three different times and been sucessful each time) Kind of off topic, but kind of not.

[...] not made. If these numbers are accurate, and they very well should be seeing as how numbers of Nintendo’s worldwide Wii domination had surfaced a while back, then this will be the first time Nintendo can claim to be the console [...]
