Top 16 sites to browse on the Nintendo Wii Internet Channel

wiiinternetchannelmenu225.jpgInfendo Forums friend, ejamer, shares this awesome list of sites to browse with the Wii Internet Channel!

The Wii Browser seems to be little more than a short-lived novelty for many people, but there are quite a few websites worth looking at when you’re trying to kill a few minutes.

Here is my personal shortlist of “must-see” websites with your Wii.  Maybe it will help to breathe some new life into the Internet Channel for a few people!

=== News and Forums ===
01. www.vc-reviews.com - Read reviews and news about the weekly Wii Virtual Console releases before you download anything.  Automatically detects if you are using the Wii Browser to view the site, and formats the content accordingly… why don’t more websites dedicated to Wii-related news do the same thing?  Before buying retro games, be sure to check out the reviews here first.

02. www.google.com/reader/wii - No secrets here… it’s just a Wii-specific RSS reader provided by Google.

=== Media and Entertainment ===
03. www.iloveim.com - Chat online with your friends using MSN, Yahoo, AOL, or GTalk.  A simple portal to the chatting application of your choice.

04. finetune.com/wii - Excellent music streaming application for Wii.  Use the default radio stations, search for music you like, or login and choose one of your custom-built playlists.  (Some people like WiiHear, but I still prefer FineTune.)

05. video.stumbleupon.com - A video browser linked from the StumbleUpon community, this Wii-compatible site has plenty of interesting content (although you have limited control over what you end up watching).

06. www.youtube.com - While some people prefer the Wii-friendly formatting you can get from SofaTube or WiiTube, I still say there is nothing like the real deal.

07. www.homestarrunner.com - Great site for online cartoons and random humor.

=== Games Worth Playing ===
08. www.ferryhalim.com/orisinal - The Flash games found here are different than most other sites.  Art and sound direction are of much nicer than the typical Flash game, making them a very different experience.  (With Christmas drawing near, I strongly recommend you try the Winterbells game.)

09. www.xensory.com - Although there aren’t many Flash games here, they are all designed specifically for the Wii.  Better yet, they support up to 4 people (assuming you have enough Wii remotes).  Very cool!

10. www.wiicade.com - A wide selection of Flash games, which are either compatible or made specifically for the Wii.

11. www.wiidoku.com - Daily Sudoku puzzles, with a Wii-friendly interface.  Great way to start the morning.

12. www.wiipicross.com - Daily Picross puzzles, with a Wii-friendly interface.  Surprisingly fun, and you can even create and submit your own puzzles.

=== Sound Interesting, But Untried ===
13. www.redkawa.com - Interested in streaming movies, music, pictures, and other media from your computer to the Wii?  RedKana has the fix you’re looking for.  I haven’t tested it myself, but reports have been positive.

14. brentalan.com/wiitabs - With all these great websites, it’s a pity that we can’t keep a couple of windows open at the same time…  Guess what: now you can!  There are several tabbed browsing options available (such as WiiMinder) but I’m just listing one here.

15. www.arcademicskillbuilders.com/wiilist.htm - Educational games, to play with children.

16. hullbreachonline.com - A Wii-compatible MMO that has recently started up.  Although rumored to be quite simple for an MMO, it’s still a great concept.

Web browsing on the Wii will never replace having a full computer, but it does offer a different and interesting experience.  If you have any favorite websites to visit on your Wii, then share them in Comments!

    You didn’t even try to plug Infendo.com.

    Great call on YouTube and WiiCade. My friends and I use both on the Internet Channel constantly.

    You missed WiiWasHere.com, its better than most those.

    I use YouTube a lot. It’s really all I use, when friends are around and we get nostalgic for old video clips or cartoons.

  7. rokerovakero says...

    you forgot the Rush Hour 3 movie site, it has a Wii game!!

    @ KillerHeroes:

    Actually, after getting a wireless keyboard for my living room, the Wii has been used often to view Infendo and post at the forums here. The only reason Infendo didn’t make my list is because there doesn’t seem to be any Wii-specific formatting - although browsing the main site works quite well anyway.
    :)

    @ WiiDude and rokerovakero:

    More recommendations are welcome! This list was intended to be a “starting place”, where others could share cool links they have found. Hopefully, I will be able to edit the forum entry each week for the next month or two, adding new Wii-friendly websites for people to check out. Of course, that depends on how many more good sites I discover when browsing on my Wii…

    :)

    (WiiDude: I took a quick peek at WiiWasHere, but didn’t really understand what the site offers. Is it a friend-code exchange site? Since you like the site, could you give a brief description of what it’s used for?)

    @ejamer

    Well the help page on the site (? at top right) gives info. But basically, you store Wi-Fi codes (DS and Wii), make friends, and have challenges to earn Achievement Coins (by ratings from challengers after challenge). With the Achievement Coins you get prizes in contests, right now its for a Wii and Smash Bros.

    Sounds very cool!

    (I was looking at the site very late last night, and must’ve missed the help page link. Thanks for the clarification.)

    RedKawa was a great idea, but I’ve seen little progress since it’s initial release. I tried WiiTransfer which is a Mac specific option that is pay. It offers a bit more, yet the interface isn’t very good.

  12. InvisibleMan says...

    I use the Wii browser a LOT! Especially for YouTube! This is one area in the online arena in which I think Nintendo got it right and better than MicroSoft: the 360 has no way to browse the internet!

    Great list, I can’t get online with my Wii yet, but I think Kingdom of Loathing would be perfectly playable on the Wii. It’s a great online flash game that plays like text mmo with simple graphics, or a very grammatical type mud. It’s very funny in the least, I can’t even properly dexcribe it.

    I think the sites name is kingdomofloathing.com

  14. Koden says...

    Very nice sites, I’ll be sure to check those out. The scary part is that I’ve had the Winterbells game on my Wii favorites list for quite some time.

  15. Streex says...

    Try MiiPlaza.net. A great website to share all sorts of Wii related stuff like Miis and friend codes.

  16. Pooba Jones says...

    I go on YouTube on the Wii mainly because if you go into full screen mode, videos are huge on the TV!(unless you have a small tv :))
