Super Mario Galaxy pre-orders yield free coins

OK, so strike my previous rant on the September Surprise. Nintendo was a little late, but today they came through in a pinch.
Basically, Nintendo is going to be giving away free money to people who pre-order Super Mario Galaxy.
Nintendo’s Super Mario Galaxy Horoscope
For Monday, Oct. 8, 2007You’ve got plenty of energy today; it’s a good day to dream of future rewards. After a lifetime spent chasing coins, finally one comes to you!
Now through Nov. 11, stop by a participating retailer and place a deposit to reserve your copy of the magnificent Super Mario Galaxy™ for Wii™. Your cosmic bounty will be great: When you return to retrieve your game on its Nov. 12 launch, you will claim a limited-edition shimmering silvery Mario™ coin, an eternal testament to your foresight.
Don’t put off tasks you know need doing-–surely this is one of them.
So it isn’t really free money, unless your closest friends are mushroom-wearing asexual midgets and you have a curious tendency to go to the wrong house eight times in a row looking for your girlfriend.
And I’m sure it’s just me, but why is the prospect of getting a free, meaningless coin about ten times more appealing than a Spartan helmet DVD case holder?

“And I’m sure it’s just me, but why is the prospect of getting a free, meaningless coin about ten times more appealing than a Spartan helmet DVD case holder?”
Umm, because you’re a Nintendo fanboy?

Not necessarily ResedentialEvil, the Spartan DVD Holder was/is a bit on the lame side.
Anyway, yeah that does sound awesome. I might actually preorder a game just for this coin.

@ RE:
No, i dont think that’s it…
For me, that is way more appealing because of what the name Mario represents, and that the helmet, while cool looking, doesnt has the feeling of a collector’s property. In other words, i can picture my coin stored kinda like those collectors dudes store really old coins… but the helmet, well, its just not the same feeling.

that helmet is lame. this coin is neat.
and this GAME…
is going to be INCREDIBLE.

I would love to see a Pic of this… Legendary coin…

Wrong, it´s because Mario is cool, and Master Chief has no charisma at all.

Isn’t this only for Australia? I heard that about some pre-order gift thingy from Nintendo…

Ugh.. it’s just more plastic crap to me. Now if it were a Zelda coin…. then we’d have something!

So in other words…it’s because you’re a Nintendo fanboy. Your responses pretty much confirm that.
Personally, I think they’re both pretty lame.

Lame as hell compared to the bonus for Wind Waker (the Zelda collectors’ edition.) But the Halo helmet was even lamer because it cost like twice as much. As a friend of mine whose kid bought it said, “It can go on the mantel as a monument to your gullibility.”

I think a mario coin is cooler than a spartan helmet cd case. Now if that Spartan Helmet was an actual helmet we’d have a different story.

@ goji:
if it was a PB helmet it would kick major ass as the best collector’s edition gift! But it’s just a pretty geekee cd case…
