Super Mario Galaxy - GDC 2007 preview

Not sure if everyone saw this yet, even though the video has been out for a little while.
Pretty amazing stuff going on with Mario these days. My head hurts when I watch that video. It looks like an incredibly hard game, but Nintendo isn’t really known for impossible control schemes. The art design is beautiful, even in YouTube quality.
How excited are you for Super Mario Galaxy?

How excited are you for Super Mario Galaxy?
I’m constantly dehydrated from peeing myself all the time. Ya. That excited.

This does look absolutely stellar.
It’s hard for me to determine which game I want more: Super Smash Bros. Brawl, or this! Both will be instant classics, and while Brawl is probably have more longevity with its online play, insane multiplayer, this looks to be the best, most innovative and FRESH Mario game since Super Mario 64, which paved the road for N64’s success with 3D platformers, analog-stick controls, etc.
The graphics are colorful, vibrate, fluid and crisp. The artistic style is fantastic, and the environments look wonderful.
I wouldn’t say I’m WORRIED about level design, but rather, curious: Will Mario travel from planet to planet, each a world of a different element? Or will the majority of gameplay take place sort of “just outside” of different planets?
I’m hoping for a mix of both, with emphasis on huge worlds a la Super Mario 64.
Though, this is a Mario game, so I don’t doubt for even a second that Nintendo will impress, to say the least.
Moreover, it is a game (much like Metroid Prime 3) that will showcase both the console’s graphical capabilities AND its controller’s potential: Supposedly when playing this game, in addition to Metroid Prime 3, controls feel the most natural, the most intuitive, the most fresh, and the most FUN!
Curious about the overall plot, as well. And also the exact details of this “co-op” play that’s in store; I’ve heard bits and pieces (one player controls that blue laser-esque thing that wards of enemies and collects coins, while the other controls Mario), but look forward to the full extent of Super Mario multiplayer!
Another item worth noting is the MUSIC in this trailer: I absolutely LOVE it! I still think Sunshine was a great game, and the music was catchy, but highly unoriginal and not very memorable. The music in ‘Galaxy’ is adventurous, exciting, fresh, and yet still nostalgic.
If we think Wii is selling well NOW because of high-quality games with innovative controls… just wait till this comes out.
Phew.
Cannot WAIT!

Me? not as excited as I am for Brawl…

I’ll put it this way:
I have three days of vacation time at work reserved specifically for this game’s launch.
And let me second the comment about the music.. I already sometimes catch myself humming this stuff, it’s so good! My fingers are crossed in hopes for the most memorable Mario music since Super Mario World.

Yeah, I really love the music and of course I’m super excited for this game. I find myself watching the trailer just to listen to the music though. Can’t wait!

Yeah, Smash is #1 for me, but this looks absolutely great. I’m excited to find out more about the game as a whole.

Even at YouTube low-res, this looks absolutely gorgeous! Proof that, graphics-wise, Wii has a lot more power under the hood than what 3rd-party developers have led us to believe…

I’m not sure I am to excited about this incarnation of Mario. Maybe that will change later. What I really want is Metroid and Brawl.

The game looks great, of course. I beleive I read somewhere that it’s being developed by the same studio that did Donkey Kong Jungle Beat, which would really make sense, because it looks graphically very similar, and very well done. I just hope it keeps the same feel as traditional Mario and isn’t another Super Mario Sunshine (Which wouldn’t be a bad thing, I’ve defended Sunshine more times than I can count… it just could be a better thing)
Also, I don’t know how everyone can say that they aren’t as excited for this as they are for Smash Bros… that’s to be expected, as far as I’m concerned, Melee is the best game created in all existance, thus far, but c’mon, balance in all gaming genres, people.
Nice to see some other people mentioning the music- I doubt that it’s Koji Kondo’s work, but a lot of times the music makes the game! Hopefully it keeps it up for the whole game… I know I thought the music along with the trailer for Twilight Princess was way better and moving than the rest of the game.
