Review report names Wii best console of 2007

Friday, December 28th, 2007 at 2:55pm by Press Release

Wii at AngleThe Nintendo Wii was judged the most popular of the big three consoles in 2007, despite extreme shortages of the console in the lead-up to Christmas, according to reviews from genuine purchasers collated by independent review publishers, Reevoo.

The Wii achieved an overall score of 8.78 out of ten, compared with 8.25 for the PlayStation 3 and 7.65 for the Xbox 360. Sony’s PlayStation scored highest on value for money, rating 7.96, versus 7.70 for the Wii and 7.15 for Microsoft’s Xbox 360.

Reviewers praised the Sony console for the integration of a Blu-Ray player, contributing to its leading value for money score. The Wii was praised for its usability, child friendliness and exercise potential in verbatim comments from buyers collated by Reevoo. The Xbox 360 scored well for graphics and design, but fared poorly in other areas. One reviewer described it as being “[as] heavy as my nan after she’s eaten an entire elephant.”

The award for best games titles also went to the Wii, scoring 8.08 out of ten, with the Xbox 360 scoring 6.81 and the PlayStation 3 scoring 5.71. Richard Anson, CEO of Reevoo, said: “The Wii has been an absolute phenomenon this year and Nintendo would have cleaned up if availability had been better this Christmas.”

I disagree in all respects. In 2007, in terms of average game quality and implement ion of community features, 360 wiped the floor with Wii. Sorry. What other complaints are there besides “it’s heavy?”

  2. Andrew-MG says...

Aha - I misread. The title of this post says “Best console” but the test of the post says “most popular.” Different thing, folks. Popularity does not make quality.

    @Andrew-MG
It’s too bad the most of the “high quality” 360 games were also on PC but with better graphics and better implementation of community features. Not that the Wii doesn’t have tons of room to improve, but I don’t think there was any “floor wiping” going on… except in sales and margin income category where Nintendo wiped the floor with everybody.

Oh, and the other “little” complaint with the 360 is that it happens to break… a lot… like it’s almost a sure thing that it’s going to break at some point, it’s just a matter of when.

  5. Andrew-MG says...

Yes, it breaks a lot. And Microsoft owned up to it with a 3 year warranty for every console costing them millions of dollars.

As far as the 360 vs. PC goes, that’s not what this is about. If you want to start a PC vs. 360 topic, then your points are valid. I’m talking about the Console war, of which the PC is not a part.

My point remains that there are far more high quality titles for 360 than Wii, and far more low quality titles for Wii than 360. This alone makes it easy for me to decide which was my favorite system of the year.

  6. waltermh says...

andrew, you should have put your comments in with reevoo as a purchaser of both systems.

though for my tastes wii wins hands down, and considering how many games wii sold, it was the best selection of games for the casual audience too, which is a much larger group then dedicated gamers.

  7. Fabio says...

waltermh is right in this one, Andrew. In the end, it all comes down to what your taste does look like. For most people who bought the Wii, its game selection fits better than the one available on the 360. In my opinion, 360 has too many difficult games - and by difficult I mean games that you must invest some time to really enjoy what it has to offer. Wii, by the other hand, has lots of pick up and play titles. And the multiplayer factor (I mean, the REAL multiplayer, where you see the ones that are playing with you) is WAY appealing on the Wii, for most people - the ones that do not care about online features. But 360 is a great gaming machine, that is true. And the fact that MS expanded its warranty does not make it a better product… I’m still suspicious that the consoles will now take 3 years to break, instead of a few months. While I still have an N64 that works fine whenever I turn it on… and it has been extensively used on its days :) Good times :D

    Best!!

So let’s see, I’ve got my Wii for some incredibly fun, quick and easy to play games, not too mention the new technology that no one else offers, AND, I have my PC for high quality graphics, in-depth RPG games, on-line communities, and full keyboard control. So just exactly why would I or anyone else actually need (or even want) a 360?
It can’t touch the Wii for fun, and it can’t touch the PC for graphics and on-line play. So just what does it offer? (Besides being a giant, expensive paper-weight that is)

  9. peshue says...

I think as a GAME machine the 360 really is the best right now, even with it’s reliability issues. But I just don’t have the time to play 40 hour type games, so for the the Wii is a better choice. There’s no arguing that there’s more high quality games on the 360 though, whether they fit your taste or not is something totally different.

  10. deepthought says...

yeah wii ftw- i recommend it to all my nongamer friends. they love it. this isn’t a casual/hardcore statement- it’s just that the pick up and play aspect is great for them.

with my gamer friends, i’m on pc and 360. xbox is great for playing from the couch (bioshock). pc is great for games i care about playing accurately (orange box), because nothing touches the kb/mouse for speed and accuracy. really, xbox live is a fantastic service and community: what non-mmorpg pc game has better community features? live has localized all my friends (across all games), and has tons of free and purchaseable digital content. and it’s easy to control who I play with, even in random halo3 matchmaking. as for complaints, the thing sounds like jet turbine when it gets going.

wii still doesn’t appeal to me- ah well. still enjoying my ds.

  11. ejamer says...

I’m guessing that this survey depends on self-selected participants — the majority of which (for the Wii, anyway) are probably non-gamers absolutely delighted with their purchase.

You know what, you can count me in with that crowd. The Wii isn’t necessarily the “best” console… but it’s fun, relatively cheap, and pretty darn cool.

I’ve played the Wii with my wife, my parents, and my nephews. Afterwards, all them were excited about the system… and my Dad even thought about buying one. None of them would’ve touched an XBox 360, so that sounds like a win in my books.

(That said, there is absolutely NOTHING wrong with the 360 — it just targets a different market.)

  12. used cisco says...

Well, the consumers are speaking and it appears they like the Wii lineup best. It just goes to show that not everyone is into shooters, even good ones. Which is fine with me.

I have to agree with the report in most respects. The Wii is the most popular because for most people its the best choice, thus the title of this article is accurate. That shouldn’t take away from the other two at all. Also, the PS3 winning the “best value” is pretty fair seeing as it DOES include a blu-ray player, a pretty valuable feature. While I may not have a desire for a blu-ray player, clearly the consumer recognizes the value, which is fair. I think the 360 would have done better on the “value” front if it included free online. I think people generally don’t like having to pay extra for features other systems provide for free, like online multiplayer.

And how much fun is the 360 when its sitting in a brown box on the back of a mail truck on its way back to MS for a return. Sure they offer a warranty, its what is required to avoid a gigantic class action lawsuit. They had no choice. The warranty was the cheapest form of damage control. A full product recall would have cost them far more but would have been the right thing to do for consumers.

  13. ResidentialEvil says...

I agree with Andrew. 360 wins hands down for me. And I don’t agree that because the Wii is being sold the most that it means the consumer “like the Wii lineup” best. The Wii continues to be only Wii Sports to most, and the software attach rate shows. I think the only thing it proves is consumers like it’s price the best. As far as the 360 breaking, yep the have a problem but I continue to chuckle because my Wii only lasted 3 months before I had to send it in, while my 360 (bought at the same time) is still working fine. And I have no gurantee that Nintendo even fixed the issue that caused my problem as they never publicly admitted the problem (even though I came acros SEVERAL who had the same problems).

But then again….why are we talking about rankings and review scores. My goodness, I wish this site would make up its mind. Scores are bad…score are good….now they’re bad again, ooops now they’re good again.

  14. Streex says...

All I know is that at my work now 5 people have a Wii and noone has a 360 or PS3. All I know is that for my daughters birthday I bought Boogie for the kids to enjoy but in the end it was the 40-something year olds taking over the Wii with some Wii Sports (so much for the Nintendo is just for kids theory). And all I know is that while shopping this holiday season, the playable Xbox 360 at my local Best Buy had the classic red ring of death (I took a picture of it. I’m gonna have to post it on my MySpace page soon). This……is all I know.

  15. nintendoh8er says...

    *Screw* Nintendo!

  16. used cisco says...

“I don’t agree that because the Wii is being sold the most that it means the consumer “like the Wii lineup” best.”

Who drew that conclusion? Your quote would make it seem like you think I did. I didn’t nothing of the sort. Your quotation of me is referring to this:

“The award for best games titles also went to the Wii, scoring 8.08 out of ten, with the Xbox 360 scoring 6.81 and the PlayStation 3 scoring 5.71.”

I mean, good gravy, if they are voting for the Wii for “best games” it would follow that they like the lineup best. I’m not trying to be a smart ass but did you even read the article?

  17. Intole says...

The lack of supply must realy be hurting them, especially around christmas becaus the parents who have decided to buy a Wii and won’t get one will probably buy a console anyway but end up getting a xbox 360 instead. This might not sound that bad but kids buy a lot of games, usualy a lot more then a casual gamer would and they are likely to have only one console.

  18. cain2 says...

yep, don’t act like juvenile fanboys Andrew n RE. It’s simply a matter of individual preference (i.e. Wii and software lineup), taken collectively. The majority surveyed have expressed their choice. They may be casual gamers–mostly ordinary folks–who have recently discovered playing console videogames. Some may be jaded or so-called “hard core” gamers like you even. The former are the driving force that has led to unprecedented growth of the videogaming industry this year. Different strokes for different folks. So chill.

  19. Andrew-MG says...

Hey, I outlined my biggest complaint above - it’s a matter of wording. Saying that Wii is the best system because it is the most popular is pretty misleading.

And in what way am I being juvenile, if you don’t mind me asking? Because I stated my opinion that Wii is not the best system in 2007? That’s opinionated, not juvenile. And you wouldn’t be the first person on here to call me opinionated. Hell, the “news” editor of this website has personally called me a troll, and yet for some reason, I still keep coming around.

  20. used cisco says...

To be fair, the problem with wording was that he used “most popular”.
Voters were asked to rate the consoles overall and the Wii scored the highest.
To me, that seems they thought the Wii is the best. Can’t blame their opinions even if we don’t agree.

  21. cain2 says...

    re: andrew

okay. you an opinionated AND juvenile fanboy.

  22. Andrew-MG says...

No offense, but the word “fanboy” has very little effect when used on infendo.com. It’s kind of like someone on MSDN Technet calling someone else a geek.

  23. used cisco says...

The word “fanboy” is just so lazy. It’s lost its luster don’t you all think?
It used to carry weight. Now that it gets slung about with such abandon, its not even fun anymore. Its almost saddening in a way.
Its as if the new definition of fanboy is “anyone who disagrees with the person using the term”.

  24. Paul says...

Hmmm. I don’t exactly trust nintendo right now. Shortages. Right. There are Wiis everywhere now. Right after Christmas. Odd, that.
