Review: Defend Your Castle

Tuesday, May 13th, 2008 at 8:02pm by David

Defend Your CastleDefend Your Castle is a WiiWare title based on the Flash game of the same name. Since I just linked you to the original free game, why should you pay 500 Wii Points for the same game? This game was meant for the Wii. The simple point click control for the original game gets even better with the Wii Remote since it really feels like you’re tossing the characters up in the air.

The Wii version of the game also adds an amazing found object art style which creates a sense of sitting in the back of study hall, goofing off with your friends. The difficulty level is extremely well balanced. Playing the game for the first time, you really can go pretty far before it gets too hectic. The new, hilarious powers you gain tend to come along just in time for the increasingly tougher enemies you face. The game plays like a round-based RTS for beginners, but the frenetic pace that builds up will definitely be a challenge for seasoned players.  Another bonus over the web version is that you can play with up to four people co-operatively.

Defend Your Castle

Defend Your Castle is a must buy. The price is the same as an NES game for Virtual Console and is definitely worth more than the majority of those titles released so far. XGen Studios has taken their great web game and turned it into an endearing work of brilliance. Four stars, easily!

Huh, might pick it up IF MY WII WOULD HOOK UP TO MY WI-FI!!

There is a substantial amount of people who are complaining about games like Defend Your Castle on WiiWare, claiming that paying for the improved Wii versions is pointless when you can play Flash-based versions for free online.

That argument holds no water, in my opinion. Maybe I’m just too comfortable spending minimal amounts of money, but Defend Your Castle is totally worth the $5.00 asking price. It has been hugely improved, has an awesome multiplayer mode…for $5.00? A steal, IMO.

I totally agree, David. This Wii version is the definitive one.

    Multiple choice test.

The best way to spend $5 is:
    (a) Four liters of gasoline.
    (b) A couple cups of coffee (as long as you don’t get fancy).
    (c) Quarter pounder with cheese from McDonalds. Just the burger - not the meal.
    (d) Hours of fun together with up to three of your best friends, flinging invaders to their doom as they rush your castle walls.

This isn’t a game for everyone, but the $5 price definitely puts it into “impulse buy” territory. Sounds like a good deal to me.

I’ve always been a big fan of XGen…it’s so nice to see their name up on something big. I will download, but I need to go out and by a wiipoints card first.

this game looks 100 times better than the original flash game. on top of that, it allows 4 player coop. obviously the flash game is a single player game. 5$, a pretty good price for multiplayer and much improved graphics.

I wanted to wait until I saw what was going to be the price for that “Tower of Goo” game… But I think you are right: $5 (400 points?) makes this one a “must buy”.

Ooops… I meant 500 points! Still, a pretty good bargain!

If anything, I’m finding many flash games that would be PERFECT for the Wii, chief among those is this little gem:

I’d definitely buy this game if it were tweaked and put on the Wii with some added co-op. I’ll wait for World of Goo but I’m definitely gonna try to buy this along with Lost Winds at some point.
