Reggie: The competition is trapped in a box

Thursday, November 8th, 2007 at 12:53am by Jack

225_hearts20regginator.jpgLeave it Reggie to say what everyone I was already thinking months ago.

Today, GameDaily quotes Reggie Fils-Aime, the current godfather of all things Nintendo in the ever important American market, and he spewed a mouthful once again. Basically, Reggie told BMO Capital Markets today that, “The challenge that our competitors have is significant. They’ve gone down the path with building expensive machines that they lose money on. They’ve gone down the path with games that are hard to develop. They’ve put themselves in a box. I don’t know how they’re going to get out of it.”

GameDaily says it’s hard to argue with that sentiment today, given Nintendo’s insane profits compared to those other two, and I, obviously, agree. But I’m finding that my opinion is becoming less “fanman bias” every day and more what we in the biz call “fact.” Game drought? Anyone with Google can tell you it never really happened as badly as the Intertubes would have you believe.  Basically, it’s only been the most passionate of gamers who have felt its effects as far as the Wii’s software library is concerned. Still disagree? I’d argue now that you probably slept through 2007. Zak and Wiki? Trauma Center? Rabbids? Madden 2007? Resident Evil? All third party, all decent, and we haven’t even hit the Nintendo titles yet.

Now, is Reggie arrogant? Obviously yes, he is. But as the head of Nintendo USA that’s his job. He’s the hired muscle, and now he’s armed with an immense amount of market research and facts. And money. He is Donkey Kong personified, with a killer system and a dominant handheld to boot. And he’s going to let you know it.

I don’t think the word “arrogant” is the right word. I don’t get the idea that Reggies comments were contemptuous of Sony or MS, or that he feels he is Superior in any way, both are somewhat necessary for someone to be arrogant. I think Reggie feels Nintendo tried something different and is having alot of success at it. I think Reggie honestly doesn’t understand how Sony and MS can turn the loss leader strategy into a winner this gen. Why does that make him arrogant? I don’t see how PS3 and MS can turn their strategies into profitable business models either. Does that make ME arrogant? This whole “nintendo is arrogant” meme is utterly lame and baseless. The fact that THIS comment has been blown out of proportion as some evidence of renewed arrogance by Nintendo proper is absurd and smacks of desperation on the part of those who wish to bring the Wii down a notch.

What I’d like to hear is Reggie’s opinion on the profits posted by EA for this year: they made $218 million on sales for the 360, and $217 million on sales on other platforms combined! And sales on Wii and DS weren’t even the highest: sales for the PS2 beat them on that!

  6. EdEN says...

Higher installed base means higher changes of profits on some hardwares over others. Most of EA games are targeted at PS2 or X360 and their total sales to dated helped them with that.

Let’s talk once EA releases NEXT YEARS total profits…

    Good point!

They’ve put themselves in a box. I don’t know how they’re going to get out of it.

Technically, the Wii is also a box, though… and as such, it is also constrained by its design limitations, just like the 360, the PS3, the PSP, the DS, etc., etc….

“Zak and Wiki? Trauma Center? Rabbids? Madden 2007? Resident Evil?”

As long as all Quarter 4 = entire year of 2007.

As for Photoshop, I am still very proud of my “Balls Deep” Reg from over a year ago. If Sony is not making cocky quotes, you bet your ass Nintendo is.

When Sony talks trash infendo is defensive. When Nintendo talks trash, infendo goes “Oooooooohhhhhhh” Intelligent passion my ass.

Any link to intendo.com should be immediately disregarded. That site is terrible.

Youre in the business? That’s cool.

Honestly, every time I see an article of yours I need to supress an urge to make snarky comments. It’s ironic that your historical ms and sony predjusdice has galvanized some of us to critisize your nintendo when we would otherwise gladly celebrate it in bliss- if only to act as a caution to those who would let ninny love turn into ugly personal attacks on those whose opinions differ.

Anyways- I’ve said it before- ntdoy ftw!!! Get a brockerage acct and put your money on a winner here people! but dont just listen to me people (as I’ve been known to hit the ‘height of ignorance and hypocricy’)- just ask Jack! The fanman in the biz! Tel us Jack, where was the stock when you bought in?
