Next Generation’s top 20 games of E3 snubs Metroid Prime 3

Monday, July 16th, 2007 at 9:29am by Jack

E3 snubTypo or gross negligence? Next Generation’s top 20 games of E3 list doesn’t mention Metroid Prime 3. Nor does the site list the title in the honorable mentions.

Now I’m as guilty a Nintendo fanman as the next guy, but this is ludicrous. Even the hardcore gaming blogs, like Destructoid, gushed like a schoolgirl over the look and feel of Metroid Prime. I have yet to read any negatives about the title other than Chris Kohler’s observation that some of the in-game buttons are a bit confusing. I thought I saw the respective “fanboy” blogs over at Joystiq praising the title too, but I could have been hallucinating after my late night binge on Ralston’s 15-year-old Nintendo cereal that I keep in my cupboard.

Several great titles do make the list however, including Mario Galaxy (I would have been comfortable subbing this out for Metroid), Rock Band, Mass Effect and LittleBigPlanet (the fact that this uber-interactive game isn’t on a console like the Wii is a sin against man).

Why a game that might redefine the control scheme for one of the more popular genres out there today is not on the list is a mystery to me. I’d love to hear the editors over there explain why.

Next-gen’s opinion pieces have been shitty for a while. I’ve had to e-mail the editor several times to not only complain about what is sometimes extreme and inexplicable bias, but also basic fact errors.

For instance, did you know Zelda TP only sold 60,000 units in Japan before falling off the charts? No? That’s because it didn’t happen. It sold 140,000 in the first weeks and remained in the charts long enough to break 400,000. You wouldn’t know that reading Next-Gen, except if you check the comments at the bottom of their articles, and you’ll soon realise their readership is actually better informed.

Other pro-Sony/Xbox360/anti-Nintendo mistakes I’ve e-mailed them about include mistaking the manufacturing costs for Elite model 360’s versus premium, stating PS3 was outselling Wii in UK while forgetting to mention Wii was only available as second hand bundles and PS3 was discounted, and that dragon quest 9 was originally being developed exclusively for PS3.

I too am very shock by this. I feel this game is going to be very successful on the Wii. The controls is damn near as close as possible you will ever get to PC and mouse feel with FPS. Hell I hope Nintendo and Retro is letting or adding some elements to the algorithm being used for this control mechanism available to other developers. Retro have clearly set the bar for controls of FPS for Wii.

As for those edits…they need to take their head out of Sony and Microsoft ass long enough to see that Metroid Prime 3 should have been on that list.

no i don’t think its a mistake that they left it out. it was done purposely. if you notice, there are quite a few FPS’ in that list. they probably thought there was plenty on that list to represent that genre. on top of that they probably prefer the old control schemes but better graphics. this doesn’t surprise me at all. but its an absolute travesty to leave out metroid prime 3. i hope this outsells halo 3.

Maybe they just didn’t like it?

It’s not really fair to un-include something the whole world is gaggling over, but include a bunch of games nobody’s ever played, some without even seeing play. Considering its obvious significance and implications for the FPS genre, they should at least say they hate it, and why. Passing it off as if it doesn’t exist is probably either childish or biased

As an example, in Next-Gen’s other article, they refer to MGS4 as a great game. Thanks, it probably is, but then no-one would really know, as no one has ever seen a single frame of gameplay.

Maybe Next Gen’s staff doesn’t have a Wii yet, and they are resentful that Nintendo hasn’t send them one?

  8. Wii Wii says...

They have the RIGHT for thier owns opinions.

… even IF they are wrong ! LOL!

    I’ve another theory… Wii is *NOT* next-gen but new-gen so they couldn’t include that game…?! ;)
