Metroid developers promise fans “won’t be dissapointed” with next project

Friday, September 21st, 2007 at 11:59am by David

Retro gave an awesome interview to MTV about Metroid Prime 3, as well as some teasers for their next project.

[The developers] and the rest of Retro are already focused on their next project, which is not another “Metroid Prime” game. What is it? They’re coy. But some Retro fans have pondered the studio going casual and making the kinds of games Nintendo’s Japan studios are emphasizing … But will Nintendo make Retro go that route too? “I’m really excited about what we’re working on next,” he said. “If people enjoy the kinds of games Retro makes, I don’t think they’re going to be disappointed about what we’re doing.”

Think they can pull off another huge hit?

I would say i´d love to see Raven Blade done by these guys, but after Prime 3, all i want is freedom for them, do whatever you want, just do it fast. Retro means quality, so anything will be great.

In the meantime we´ll have Disater :D

I hope they do another 2-D side-scroller, like Super Metroid or Metroid Fusion.

After finally seeing, on my own tv screen, what retro achieved with mp3 I’m convinced they can(bear with me people I live in jamaica & just got my copy 2 days ago). They have set the bar for fps games on the wii from an interactive & graphical standpoint. Aiming, movement, pulling switches & levers all feel natural. Something that has never been achieved in any other console fps. And even though PC shooters claim the best accuracy they still can’t match the level of interactivity provided by the wii remote.

Also all the gameplay elements are nicely balanced. The action & puzzle solving & backtracking never really feel monotonous. The only gripe I have is all the scanning I still need to do, god I hate scanning. But its a very small annoyance to bear for what is a nearly perfect video game experience. I’m really looking forward to whatever retro is working on next. They seem primed to push the Wii to its graphical & interactive limits.

Yeah I think it’s Raven Blade, if that is the game that they put aside a while back for Metroid Prime 1.

Pretty sure Raven Blade was totally scrapped, along with 5 other projects when the original Metroid Prime began. Through an acquaintance, I found out in January that Metroid Prime 3 would be the final installment in the franchise (as far as consoles are concerned…portables are different bag of chips….) and that early preproduction had already begun on their next project. Also, I’m fairly certain that the company is not being reduced to producing casual or mini-game oriented software. They’ve no experience in such and Nintendo is far to intelligent to use the wrong resources on the wrong project. What I do know is that the running rumor is that Retro Studios is now working on Kid Icarus. Judging from said interview, Kid Icarus and the original Metroid were marketed and accepted as being the same genre; even both franchises’ sequels on the original GameBoy were extremely similar designs (although Metroid II had considerably better aesthetics). So it wouldn’t be totally shocking to hear Nintendo has the Metroid Prime team working on Kid Icarus (on top of that, why would Nintendo suddenly bring the character Pit out of total obscurity and pop him into the forefront of Smash Bros.?). Or maybe I’m just crazy and lost in a day dream….sure is a nice dream, though…..

I can’t really think of any existing IPs that Nintendo could delegate to Retro that would make any sense (except for Icarus), so that leaves the option of a new Original IP. In the end though, I’m convinced it’s not going to really matter what they make (as long as it’s not some God-forsaken mini-game or casual thing), because it’s Retro Studios. The Metroid Prime series is quite possibly the most technically sound and polished franchise in the industry, and possibly has the greatest art direction in the history of gaming. That’s a hell of a track record to live up to. I’m guessing the official announcement (if it doesn’t happen in Tokyo this week) will happen some time between now and GDC in March.

    Kid Icarus!

    @Kale:

Nice predictions my friend, Kid Icarus would be so so sweet done by Retro, my hopes are high for this guys:)

I think they put too much work into Raven Blade to ever officially scrap it. However, I think with the FPS shooter experience many members of Retro have I wouldn’t be surprised to see a AAA FPS next with a nice storyline.

Please, Metroid Prime Hunters-style multiplayer online shooter with Wiimote gesture action (grappling, rifle butting, shield yanking, etc.), the only console-based aiming system worth using, and MP3-quality graphics! That could be the best online shooter ever made and would sell in the bajillions.

    Halo 3 who?

I’d put money on the possibility of a brand new IP. I doubt it will be a casual game, few seem to acknowledge that the biggest part of Nintendo’s strategy is offering a wide array of games for all skill sets. Every Wii Sports lover has the potential to become interested in more involving games down the road, and Nintendo values Retro’s contributions to the Nintendo catalog too much to limit them to casual games.

The most ironic twist, if Retro is doing Kid Icarus, would be that KI ran on Metroid’s engine for the NES…and was always Metroid’s little brother so to speak…to be done by Retro would have such a magnificent flavor of nostalgia and irony, I might explode. Especially if they used the same engine.

Though, I would NOT want the new KI game (assuming there is one) to be an FPS. Retro is an amazingly talented studio, no doubt that the Prime series is the best trilogy in recent years, but I think moving away from the FPS/FPA Genre would be great for Retro to spread their wings a little (please pardon the pun).
