Mega Man 9 to have optional 8-bit bugs, sprite flicker

Tuesday, August 5th, 2008 at 7:43am by Jack

Once upon a time, finding a bug in a game didn’t crash your console or require a firmware update, it just caused some slowdown or sprite flicker. Those were the days, and they were due more to limitations of the system than lazy development. Thankfully, Capcom is going to include them in the upcoming Mega Man 9 WiiWare title, thereby completing its rise to retro awesomeness utterly and completely. Also thankfully, these bugs, which are features, are completely optional.

“Yeah, there were some things, like you couldn’t have more than three enemies on the screen at once, so we had to make sure that that’s how it stayed in our game. In the part with the dragon with the flame, [there should be] flickering, and whatnot,” said Mega Man 9 producer, Hironobu Takeshita. “In the options of this game, you can adjust that, unlike the old games. We purposely put some of those old-school bugs into this game, so it does recreate that feel.”

I can see my Wii Classic Controller flying through the window already. Sweet, sweet challenge.

Nice, going all out with the retroness is cool - sure to please old timers. Atleast this is one game where you know what the developer wants, trying to create an effect and going all out to make sure it works, gotta take my hat off to them guys (and gals i guess.. lol)

When I heard at E3 that the bugs would remain in the game to “recreate the retro feel,” I thought it was a neat idea but I was kind of miffed. I’m glad to hear that this is optional, personally.

Hmm… How many Megaman articles is Infendo gonna force on us?!?

When I read this headline I thought “Oh, so that’s how you can excuse laziness…”

    At least its an option.

I agree. The retro graphics are great, but intentionally keeping in bugs is not. Let’s use music as an example: In music, if you make another classical music album these days, that’s great. But it wouldn’t be so great if the music is 72kbit quality and is completely mono. Did I mention the bass (low pass) was removed to give it that authentic, old radio quality?

i think i just peed my pants

Moyer, DmNt, I don’t know what you guys are talking about.

If you make a retro megaman, the slowdown is essential - when I think about 8-bit megaman games, I think about slowdown, it’s part of the gameplay, so much in fact that the slowdown was included in the gamecube and playstation collections.

You just don’t get it, do you?
This is how the 80’s were. Now I don’t know if you grew up in the 80’s or not, but this is what was commonplace in so many games back then, and not just Mega Man! Utilizing those glitches was what was cool as well - one of the classic glitches of all time was the Minus World!

And as Seaniccus stated above - slowdown. That’s a classic feature as well. It’s necessary to include, because that’s how everything operated back then. Because I’m a player from the 80’s, I have a gigantic tolerance for slowdown - even in today’s games (aka Brawl online).

So don’t go dissing these features. If you want retro, then you need to accept EVERYTHING retro, including bugs and flicker and glitches!
And if you don’t want it, then turn the option off.
But I’m a true 80’s nostalgic - I’m going to keep this on the entire time!

Any arguing is a moot point, however, as the glitches and slowdown are OPTIONAL!!!

Joltman, thats like saying its acceptable when remaking your favorite toilet to also remake the turd as well.
