Konami drops price of Dewy’s Adventure

dewydrop.JPGWhile perusing through the Wii section at a local Wal-Mart, I happened to stumble across a very compelling deal.

Dewy’s Adventure has been dropped to $20.

Produced by Shingo Mukaitoge of Elebits fame, the game released in North America last September to a luke warm critical reception. Most criticisms stemmed from the game’s finicky controls and unbearable presentation.

But don’t be fooled by the nauseating cuteness of Dewy’s Adventure. Beneath its sugar-coated exterior lies a surprisingly challenging and well-designed platformer with a strenuous ranking system, beautiful visuals, lots of unlockables, and a custom level editor with which players can create their own stages and send them to friends via WiiConnect24. Best of all, it is an original, exclusive Wii effort.

At its reduced price, especially, the game is worth every penny.

    Gee,

I was going to get Kirby’s Air Ride and Star Fox: Assault, but I guess I can save Kirby’s Air Ride for another day.

I would have bought this from amazon.com earlier but for some reason Wii games don’t seem to be allowed to ship outside the US so I have to buy my games from Canada and Dewys is still sold at max cost for Wii games there.

I loved Elebits (still love actually) but I never bought this game for one reason or another. I now know what my recently acquired $40 gift card to Target will be purchasing.

I bought Dewy’s because Elebits was the best non-Zelda game for the Wii up to that point, and I played enough Bubble Bobble and Mappy back when arcade games were cool that kawaii is a positive for me, not a negative.

But I got as far as Caterpidron (in the order I played, the last boss before the “all bosses” world) in my first day of playing it, and found I didn’t care enough to continue. It was beautiful and a little trippy, but still basically a standard platformer but with mushy, non-centering, Atari 5200-style control, and I wish I could have just played it with the classic controller.

For 20 bucks I wouldn’t have felt ripped off, but for 50 I did.

raindog469: Yeah, that’s why I felt the price drop was mentioning. For full price, Dewy’s Adventure certainly isn’t for everyone. It has enough flaws to warrant criticism. And it’s nowhere near as good as Elebits. But for $20, it is almost a steal.

Hey, it could at least make your wait for Brawl less agonizing.

call me insane but to me Dewy felt fresher than Galaxy…..the controls whille not easy to master really immerse you in the game. Great game

I’ll have to see whether GS dropped the price too, maybe I’ll pick it up this week.

i also bought elebits from this developer and i love it. for some reason, this game just doesn’t sound all that appealing to me. i think it would be difficult for this game to top elebits. if i had to pick between the 2 all over again, i’d go with elebits, which is still one of the best control games on the wii yet. the environment manipulation is great.

Dewey’s Adventure is an excellent game. Once you get through the putrid, cutesy, inappropriate opening sequence, the actual game is a blast. It’s an original, creative take on the platformer genre. I had the same feeling my first time playing it as I did with Kirby: Canvas Curse.

to me it really felt fresh….its simply alteration to the sucked dry analog control method

Derek, I know this is probably not going to be the most popular thing to say around here, but I’m waiting with greater anticipation for Okami and De Blob than I am for Brawl.

booooom, Dewy’s does use analog controls in the form of the accelerometers. They just aren’t self-centering like most analog joysticks.

Maybe I’d have enjoyed Dewy’s more if I hung a weight off of it to make the Wiimote right itself when I stopped trying to tilt it. Yes, I know you could press a button to center it, but I think the addition of that button just demonstrates how awkward non-centering controls are.

ah come on its using motion its not using a stick or somethin……like galaxy and all other platformers…….and the controlls worked fine with me…i do acknowledge they require some gettin used to but after a while it becomes second nature……once you have mastered the controlls the game becomes more fun to play and the controlls really immerse you in the expirience….who knows maybe you didn’t have the patience to get to that point…..

The reviewers all bombed this game…Am I missing something here, it looks like a game for my seven year old cousin. I’m 27, any possible way I could enjoy this thing?

  14. raindog469 says...

I think playing through five of the six worlds took plenty of patience.

  15. Derek B. says...

daverage: It is actually too difficult for a typical seven-year-old, but likely too adorably cutesy for a lot of people our age.

But I certainly enjoy the game. Depending on your gaming tastes and whether or not you like platformers, it certainly is worth a rental, at least.

I love platformers. Looooove them. This, though is only ok in my book. I picked it up because of the price drop and I certainly don’t feel ripped off for $20, but it makes me want to play Mercury Meltdown Revolution.

I would recommend that $20 game over this one, though Dewy’s is definitely worth a rental for a somewhat fresh and definitely original design.

I just wish they had made it weirder so it could be in the Katamare-range of strangeness, which people seem to like more than the kiddy look.
