Guitar Hero: World Tour Wii unboxing
Wednesday, November 5th, 2008 at 5:32am by Blake
Activision was kind enough to send the “complete band version” of Guitar Hero World Tour to Infendo HQ yesterday. For any who still don’t own the game, here’s what physical goods you can expect for $190 plus tax. Quick impressions after the break. Full review pending.

My three-year-old helps peel away the layers to reveal the guitar box and game.

Best guitar controller ever made. Period. Although I’m not a fan of sunburst.

Close up of the body.

Snap on the neck for face melting pleasure.

What good would hardware be without software?

The drum box awaits…

Sticks, cymbals, and mic.

High-hats in da house.

USB mic. Check.

Guitar Hero sticks. Would Chad Smith approve?

The drum kit. Snare left, high tom middle, low/floor tom right.

Stand and kick pedal.

Kick pedal up close.

Nothing to see here. Empty box. Go play the game already.
Initial observations
- Best band game money can buy on Wii, compelling multiplayer and track list
- Upgrade to Guitar Hero III in every way (graphics, sound, features)
- Very polished game, great online store, excellent hardware
- Purple solo notes are difficult to distinguish from regular notes, unlike 360 version, but not a big deal

If I may ask, what camera are you using those pictures came out really sharp and impressive.

I have to disagree on just the minor purple note issue, it’s pretty easy for me to tell.
Anyway, yep, exactly how my box came. =P

I want to know the joys of opening that box!!

It was definitely an adventure opening my box, too!
I do like the new guitar quite a bit. The longer strum bar is nice and the touch sensitive “solo” section is a great addition.
Unfortunately, I think my guitar is a lemon. Strumming down is inconsistent (misses every 3-5 notes), occasionally the touch sensitive section misreads and causes missed notes, and the whammy bar doesn’t stay in position (it keeps rotating back down too far away from the strum bar).
My drums works very well and the mic is quite a nice piece, too!

The only thing I’ve had a problem with is my drum set - randomly, when I hit one cymbal, both of them register. It doesn’t have anything to do with velocity; I tried hitting the cymbal more and more lightly, but it didn’t have any effect.
Too late for me to get a replacement too :/ Oh well.

Shitty, downgraded character creator, and an online mode than only connects two Wiis togethere at a time—essentially only allowing one-on-one versus or co-op.
Don’t believe the hype that Vicarious Visions has been selling people.
Don’t buy into the positive reviews either, because it seems these people have only played the Wii version. The Wii has gotten a second-rate port once again (and no, I’m not talking about the obvious graphical differences).

I feel stupid for asking this, but can the drum kit be bought separately? I would love to just have the game, the guitar, and the drum kit without the mic and the extra guitar.

@benthedorklord:
Don’t return it yet!
Go to Activision’s site, and request a USB-to-MIDI cable.
That cable is used with the recently released software program used to tweak the sensitivity issues with your drums.
I should be getting my cable soon, and I’ll be able to fix my drum problem as well.
Check out my threads in the Wii Forums to find more info.

Andrew G., you only get ONE GUITAR with the thing, so while you could potentially buy just the game without the kit, you’d probably end up paying more for buying it all separately than buying the kit with the mic.
I believe there is or will be a kit with just the game and guitar though.

@Poochy, your just being way too hyper-critical that it ain’t funny.

I got World Tour last week. I think it’s great. Though, before buying it my only experience with a rock rhythm game was playing Rock Band a couple times at a friends house.
I had no problem with the drums. While, I’ve read that the Wii version is less complete than PS3 and 360, it doesn’t detract from the experience for me simply because I don’t own those systems.
I wanted a band game for my Wii, and by all accounts it appears that World Tour is much better (and less gimped) than Rock Band for the Nintendo system.
As I said, I’m really happy with it. It’s been a blast.

Does anyone know if any USB microphone will work with this?
November 5th, 2008 at 7:05 pm
@ Liraco: Ah, thanks! I appreciate the help.

I love opening boxes!

@Vertol Any USB mic will work. Only ones that won’t work are USB headsets.

I was thrilled when I opened my box but it was short lived once I discovered there was NO software inside. That’s right, brand new item, completely factory sealed and no software disc or case. I called Toys R Us back right away and getting the impression they had no clue I drove back to the store to have them open another box to give me the game.
My initial observation was the Yellow symbol. You got to smash that mother to have it register. Just order the FREE drum kit to fix that.

Really looking forward to this getting released down under next week - I also don’t really care how it compares to the 360/PS3 versions…
They’re not much fun when you don’t own one of those consoles!
IMHO Guitar hero III is one of the most fun games to come out on the Wii so far, so if this is even slightly better (it’s got drums, c’mon!), i’m a fan already.

Atlantis1982:
You’d be right if it weren’t for the fact that I spent $200 on a game that I expected to have a decent character editor (instead of a character editor that is altogether worse than that of games like Day of Reckoning for Gamecube) and online mode that worked as advertised.
November 6th, 2008 at 1:32 am
Poochy,
What is your take on Mii freestyle vs. Wii Music?
November 6th, 2008 at 3:41 am
@Poochy:
Uh, you’re hating GHWT just because of the character editor and online mode?
What about the rest of the game? Doesn’t that factor into your hate?
Seriously. Those two features are no valid reason to say GHWT sucks.

*Gasp*! It’s beautiful!!

Been playing GH:WT… awesome… The instruments are the best I’ve used so far, and I like the elevated cymbols, RB2 didn’t have them. The guitar is the BEST I’ve used of any system. So far the game is really fun… I have two ‘CONS’ though, and they both have to do with having friends over… First… You need 4 Wii remotes if you want all 4 instruments.. I borrowed two, but I’ll eventually have to drop the the extra $80 that this game requires. (I already have the gh4 guitar for the bass). My Second gripe is that they don’t have a “No-Fail” cheat anymore… that makes this no longer a party game. Now everyone has to have skill to finish a song… and that blows when you’re trying to include everyone in the fun.
