Flickr user and friend of Infendo, sMoRTy71, reports: “A full 6 weeks prior to release, Target has reserved a large section of their gaming isle to the Wii.”
I wonder if that same store has a section already dedicated to the PS3. Remember the PS3 launched BEFORE the Wii. It would be very significant if the store has NO PS3 space set aside, yet already has Wii space allocated. This would mean they don’t plan on getting much PS3 stock at all.
I work at a Target, and yesterday I walked over to electronics on my break to find people taking ALL the Gamecube/DS/GBA games off the shelves to move things around. I came back a bit later and this very same display was set up where the DS games used to be.
@used cisco: It wasn’t set up, but there were PS3 banner-type things that were very similar to the Wii ones in that photo. I didn’t see what kind of space had been allocated for PS3 stuff though.
All Targets should have this section now, and yes, there is a section like this for the PS3 as well. The electronics reset at all Targets was this week, so all stores should have these up.
Also, I’ve already told our signing specialist that I want those Wii signs when they come down.
It’s funny, because this is one of the only times they (corporate) has been “ok” with empty sections. It’s usually bad to have any empty space. Of course, corporate has never tried to make too much sense.
I think it’s because this is the once a year (or one of the 2 times a year) that electronics will reset, so they’re changing that over now.
The Target HQ has recently been TOTALLY fine with leaving sections empty when they are a transition area. As long as there are signs saying that something is coming soon, it is alright (this is changed from having the flex over the area as they wanted to do about a year ago.) Since there is signing that is informative and advertising the new systems, it actually helps to improve the sales of those items in the future. Also, the video game sections have been really light as of recently due to the lackluster release of new games. The Transition date for electronics was 10-1 so all Target stores SHOULD have this area completed by today.
Just to confirm, I stopped by my local super target and they did indeed have the Wii area set up just like in the photo. They also had a PS3 section up but it didn’t have as cool posters up. Also, while the Wii section was 1 cabinet, the PS3 section was 2 cabinets. One of them is currently housing the PS2 accessories. There were still 4 cabinets dedicated to the PS2. The Wii is going to have a tough time with just 1 cabinet. I imagine after christmas the Wii will consume the gamecube space, which was another 2 cabinets.
I went to target on friday night to pic up guitar hero and saw the PS3 had a display… i immediately ran to the nintendo section to see if they too had one and they did, lol. both had the displays identical. Made me hyped!
We don’t have Target up here in Canada. We do have Best Buy and Futureshop though. But those stores don’t have those bomb shelter cases.
Futureshop? Never heard of it, but it sounds funny! HAHA!
Anywho, I’m going to the mall today, so I shall stop by Target to see if they have a Wii section.

Futureshop is a division of Best Buy and I believe they are only in Canada. It’s a fairly good store.

Andrew and Natrino,
Thanks for the info. I’ll be swinging by my local super target tonight and take a look as well.
Is it just me or is this a bit early to be using up your display space like that?

They’re doing it in Columbus, Ohio

Heh, i work at a Target, and Umm actually set those up in there. So I know all about it.
My store is a little different we have 1 case devoted to DS, 1 to GBA, 2 to Gamecube, 1 Xbox, 1 Xbox360, 2 for PS2
Additionally we have one case for both the PS3 and Wii.
i expect the Wii to be empty a lot… the PS3 not so much.

My Target did the same thing. I was kinda disappointed that the salesperson didn’t know much about it.
