For the month of August, Nintendo saw a healthy surge in sales for the 3DS as the console managed to move 235,000 units in the U.S., approximately 185,000 of them coming after the August 12 price drop. This increase amounts to a 260 percent increase in sales for the month.
This could very well be the beginning of a sustained sales run for Nintendo and the 3DS with the holiday season approaching and Triple A titles on the horizon in Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7. Those titles are a good start, but if the 3DS is going to be here for the long haul, it isn’t a second analog the system needs, it’s more killer titles.
Here is the Nintendo response from Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing, on the numbers for the month of August:
Consumers are responding very positively to the new suggested retail price of $169.99 for the Nintendo 3DS. With Star Fox 64 3D and the new Flame Red color launching tomorrow, and Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 arriving later this year, Nintendo 3DS will offer consumers cutting-edge entertainment and tremendous value this holiday season.
We will have to wait until next month to see if the 3DS can keep it’s momentum gained from the abrupt price drop, but things are most definitely looking up. Now if only I can find a carrying case big enough to fit my second analog slider.
