Nintendo has released a list of all the North American Wii million sellers

…and there are a ton of games on the list! Ok, so not all of the titles can be considered triple A. Zumba Fitness: Join the Party selling 1.42 million…really? But most titles that made the cut are most certainly deserving of being in your collection. A few surprises: Metroid Prime 3/Prime Trilogy not even making the list? Really North America?! Also, how is it that great party games like Boom Blox and Mario Strikers Charged have yet to sell a million? Mind boggling.

The rest of the list seems pretty legit, and my Wii collection contains many of the titles listed (you’re welcome Nintendo/3rd parties). What do you make of the list? You can see the full thing after the jump. (more…)

3DS numbers looking up for the month of August

Thursday, September 8th, 2011 at 10:48pm by Eugene

For the month of August, Nintendo saw a healthy surge in sales for the 3DS as the console managed to move 235,000 units in the U.S., approximately 185,000 of them coming after the August 12 price drop. This increase amounts to a 260 percent increase in sales for the month.

This could very well be the beginning of a sustained sales run for Nintendo and the 3DS with the holiday season approaching and Triple A titles on the horizon in Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7. Those titles are a good start, but if the 3DS is going to be here for the long haul, it isn’t a second analog the system needs, it’s more killer titles.

Here is the Nintendo response from Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing, on the numbers for the month of August:

Consumers are responding very positively to the new suggested retail price of $169.99 for the Nintendo 3DS. With Star Fox 64 3D and the new Flame Red color launching tomorrow, and Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 arriving later this year, Nintendo 3DS will offer consumers cutting-edge entertainment and tremendous value this holiday season.

We will have to wait until next month to see if the 3DS can keep it’s momentum gained from the abrupt price drop, but things are most definitely looking up. Now if only I can find a carrying case big enough to fit my second analog slider.

Who picked up a 3DS last month?

Nevermind the critics: How 2D Mario beats 3D Mario

Wednesday, August 25th, 2010 at 1:40am by Dan

The Brainy Gamer writes:

As much as we enjoy blasting 3D Mario into space and navigating him around 3D orbs, a quick glance at sales figures makes one thing clear. We like Mario best when his world is flat. We still, apparently, prefer running from left to right.

Consider the numbers this way:

  • Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2 combined total sales: 12.3 million
  • New Super Mario Wii total sales: 15.5 million
  • New Super Mario DS total sales: 22.4 million

This follow-up comment does a fine job explaining why, i.e. 2D Mario appeals to more people, including both active and once-active gamers.
