Pokémon Black 2 and White 2 is a strange specimen when it comes to Pokémon releases. Never before has there been a direct sequel to a Pokémon title, and even stranger still, the game will be released for Nintendo’s last generation handheld the DS. According to Japanese magazine CoroCoro, there is certainly a lot to be excited about in this year’s new Pokémon title, even if the game is destined for only two dimensions.

Many familiar faces will be returning in Pokémon Black 2 and White 2, including the Champion Alder and the main character’s best friends Bianca and Cheren, that latter of which will return as a normal-type gym leader. Bianca will be assistant to Professor Juniper in Pokémon Black 2 and White 2, and will apparently be the one to give you your starter Pokémon at the start of the game.

In more exciting news, the game will include what is to be deemed as the Pokémon World Tournament, where trainers will be able to battle gym leaders from past Pokémon titles such as Brock, Misty, and even Giovanni. There will even be a feature in the game that lets you make a short movie of some sort, and display them in the Hollywood themed area called PokéWood.

I would still have preferred the game be a brand new 3DS title, but by the looks of things Pokémon Black 2 and White 2 won’t be a disappointment. At the very least, it will give fans of the series something to hold them off until a proper 3DS is revealed.

Attempting to Explain the Trade from Black and White to Black 2 and White 2

Attempting to Explain the Trade from Black and White to Black 2 and White 2

As with every main-series Pokémon game, Black 2 and White 2 will undoubtedly feature the ability to trade Pokémon with their previous installments. However, this time around, it’ll be interesting to see exactly how the games justify the act of the trade. Seeing as the games belong to the same generation of games (the fifth), moving Pokémon from game to game will surely be done through simple trading rather than the more involved process of transferring, or migrating, from previous generations. This time around, though, games taking place during two specifically unique time frames within the same region will be linking to one another…and that just doesn’t make a whole lot of sense.

In previous instances, say with the trading of Pokémon between Silver Version and Crystal Version, the games were virtually the same. There were some minor differences, but at the end of the day, they ended up in the same place and shared the same time frame. It made sense in that way. Black(2) and White(2), however, are the first games with a continuing story line into sequels, meaning that no matter how you slice it, Black 2 and White 2 take place after the events of Black and White and in the same region to boot. Therein lies the problem.

Trainers living in post-Black and White Unova, where everything is hunky-dory, will be trading with other trainers dwelling within Black 2 and White 2′s Unova which is at that point covered in ice and set in a time frame months after the first games. See the dilemma? Players would literally be trading across time.

It’s always possible that the games won’t simply ignore this paradox, but fully embrace it and involve the act of time travel in the trading process. Celebi can roam through time and Dialga controls it – it’s not like the series has strayed from this before, and it’d be great if such a concept was used to liven up the act of trading.

It’s also possible that Game Freak will use the Global Link to pursue the act of trading, implementing a sort of Pokémon cloud involving the Dream World to transfer Pokémon from game to game in light of this unique situation Black(2) and White(2) find themselves in.

Call me Doc Brown, but I’d kill to see the games actually mention the issue of time when trading inevitably becomes an option. Share your thoughts on this paradox in the comments.

Pokémon Black 2 & White 2 – the Plot Thickens (Maybe)

Pokémon Black 2 & White 2 - the Plot Thickens (Maybe)

Pokémon fans have a lot to think about lately. Black and White Versions are no doubt still getting good workouts (I know my White Version is), Pokémon Conquest is on the way next month, and Black 2/White 2 hit in Japan this June with an autumn release for the U.S. As if we don’t have enough on our plates to keep us satisfied, Junichi Masuda (GameFreak’s Game Director) recently advised readers of his blog to play through the corresponding sequel to whichever version, Black or White, that they played already. It’s feasible that this suggestion was made with plot in mind, and the only plot detail that varies from version to version is which dragon N rode off into the sunset at the game’s end. It makes sense that Masuda would recommend buying the same color sequel to keep that part of the plot straight.

I’d be willing to bet that N’s far from gone and that he’ll be back with a lot to say about Kyurem’s fusing with his beloved Reshiram or Zekrom. Will he try to restore Unova and quell Kyurem? On the other hand, maybe he’s completely fine with the fusion and is the one who initiated Unova’s deep freeze. He was rather stuck-up, after all, and he does consider himself to be more of a Pokémon than a person. Will he be a punisher, or a savior? We’ll soon see.

Speaking of Unova’s icy situation, lots more changes are in store. This pair of games marks the first time a region has been so drastically modified between two games, sporting new towns, gym leaders, and who knows what else. I’d even be surprised if the starters remain the same. Being the first main series direct sequel in Pokémon history, it’d be a great time to break the Fire, Water, Grass tradition, and offer some completely new Pokémon. An import feature from the get-go would be an amazing inclusion, allowing players to essentially pick up where they left off with their old teams. Opponents’ Pokémon levels could scale accordingly and make for a truly challenging game throughout…but that’s admittedly one heck of a long shot.

Many looming questions and hopes surround Black 2 and White 2, N’s possible inclusion being the most important. His story is something the likes of which Pokémon games have never known, and Masuda’s suggestion seems to poke at his continuing legacy. Only time will tell. Where’s a Celebi when you need one?
