Could the Nintendo Network actually be Nintendo’s answer to Xbox Live and PSN?

Friday, January 27th, 2012 at 8:44pm by Eugene

During Satoru Iwata’s latest financial briefing, the Nintendo president revealed a few interesting tidbits about Nintendo’s new console. First and formost, it looks like Nintendo is finally going to be taking online seriously with Wii U. The new online network that Nintendo has christened the ‘Nintendo Network’ will be far and away Nintendo’s most ambitious step towards really delivering a compelling place for gamers to game online.

While details about the new network are still scarce, Iwata has promised that with Wii U, personal accounts that will allow multiple user accounts per system will become a reality. This means that online profiles will no longer be system based. Whether that means each player will be given a friend code, or if an Xbox Live gamertag style system will be implemented remains to be seen.

Iwata also reiterated that paid add-on content in the form of DLC will be coming down the pipeline for Wii U and 3DS. While we already knew that games like Theatrhythm Final Fantasy would allow players to purchase new songs as DLC, this is the first time Iwata has commented on how Nintendo would like to use the technology. In addition to DLC, Nintendo has shown interest in providing the digital distribution of full retail games. Nintendo has stated that they will be taking into consideration their relationship with retailers however, because you don’t want to piss off Gamestop after-all.

The biggest take away out of all this seem to be that Nintendo is finally wisening up and stepping up their online presence. For too long Nintendo has promised to offer online functionality that would rival that of Xbox Live and PSN, but have fallen far short of the target. If all of these plans come to fruition, it looks like the Big N will finally be able to stand toe to toe with the likes of Sony and Microsoft in the online arena, and stand a fighting chance.

How much would you pay for Mario Kart DLC?

Friday, January 6th, 2012 at 11:59am by David

There are only a couple dozen tracks in Mario Kart 7 for 3DS, so I got to thinking about DLC downloadable tracks for the game. I think I’d be willing to pay around $5 for each new “cup” of four courses. Of course, this would create a question around the inclusion of these courses in the online aspect of the game.

Do you think this is a good idea and how much would you be willing to pay?

Nintendo + Best Buy = 3DS download service

Tuesday, May 17th, 2011 at 4:13pm by Eugene

Next time you walk into your local Best Buy make sure you bring your 3DS with you. Nintendo has just announced a partnership with Best Buy in which the retailer will provide access to “exclusive offers as well as additional entertainment content such as gaming extras and movie trailers.”

The part about gaming extras has got me listening. Could the service perhaps bring additional world to explore in the upcoming Super Mario 3DS title? Only time will tell!

This sounds great and all but wouldn’t using a service already on an existing home console make more sense? Just saying.

Official Nintendo lingo after the break.

Angry devs of Angry Birds respond to Reggie calling App Store games “disposable”

Tuesday, March 1st, 2011 at 2:29pm by Chelsea

Reggie Fils-Aime, the president of NOA, ruffled a few feathers when he defended Nintendo’s traditional pricing tier and threw in a jab at $0.99 downloadable games from the iTunes App Store, calling them “disposable” and “one of the biggest risks of the gaming industry”. Some say that these games represent a threat to mainstream gaming as a whole; others believe the enticingly cheap games are just a threat to Nintendo’s bottom line.

At their GDC presentation, the developers of Angry Birds took the opportunity to take aim at the Nintendo stronghold and lob a few verbal bombs of their own. Rovio executive Peter Vesterbacka had this to say:

There were comments by Nintendo that 99¢ games are destroying the industry and making games disposable. We don’t regard Angry Birds as disposable content. That’s why every few weeks we update the game: more levels, more content.

When you look at the pricing, there’s no denying it: 99¢ is the App Store price. But true value comes from updating. Games today are more about turning something static into a service. Websites that never get updated aren’t usually very popular. Ones that always shift are.

If you have ever played Mega Man 7 on the Super Nintendo. You should be familiar with the sinister copy of Mega Man know as Bass. He is of course designed by Dr. Wily, and was constructed based on research on Mega Man.Bass1 Bass has strong desire to defeat Mega Man and be known as the strongest robot in the world often makes him rebel against Dr. Wily’s own orders. Though he wants to defeat Mega Man, Bass often works together with him against a common enemy, though usually for his own purposes.

He will be available as DLC for WiiWare along with the other consoles versions. of Mega Man 10 all on the same date, April 5th, and will cost 200 Nintendo Bass3Points. Bass’s special abilities seem to be his character defining diagonal attack as well as a dash move. Besides Bass himself, Capcom has stated that they have also planned more DLC for Mega Man 10, including three special stages, and the return of endless attack mode.

What do you think about Mega Man 10? Does it stand up well against the previous titles in the series as well as Mega Man 10?
