Sonic racing game leaked by SEGA Europe

Sorry, Tails. My money’s on Sonic.

SEGA Europe today revealed Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing, a kart racer featuring some of the company’s most popular characters.

The game is currently scheduled to release in early 2010 for multiple platforms, Wii and DS included.

Details are sparse, but SEGA has confirmed Sonic, Dr. Eggman, Tails, Rose and Samba de Amigo’s AiAi and Amigo as playable characters so far.

Like Nintendo’s Mario Kart series, Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing features weapons and power-ups players can use to thwart the competition, and each character also has a unique special move.

And, like Diddy Kong Racing, the game includes vehicles such as planes and bikes.

Despite its obvious similarities to two of Nintendo’s pioneering kart racers, however, SEGA insists Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing will be a unique product.

“Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing is no ordinary racing game,” says SEGA Europe’s marketing director Gary Knight. “Its huge variety of characters and vehicles, plus the ability to play both online and off, set it apart from other games of this type.”

“The team have pushed the boundaries of what you would normally expect,” says Knight. “(They’ve) created a different and unique party-racing title whereby you really can’t take anything for granted!”

As Knight detailed, Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing includes both a local split-screen mode for up to four players and online multiplayer.

The announcement first appeared on SEGA’s official press website, before being quickly removed. The game is still posted on SEGA Europe’s Sonic City Blognik, a blog devoted to the company’s flagship mascot.

Expect more on Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing at E3 next week.
