Review: Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games (Wii)

mariosonicolympics.jpgWith a huge Mario title coming out this week, a would-be huge game is going overlooked. Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games for Wii is a testament to the quality of game you can get when huge game companies put their heads together. Graphically, the game is almost flawless. Sound is also well done, with the exception being the lack of national anthems for the country you choose.

Playing as characters from the Mario and Sonic universes is fine, but competing with them as yourself with a Mii is even better. In fact, if this game didn’t include the use of Miis, I wouldn’t have enjoyed it as much as I did.

Gameplay isn’t too bad for most events. Controls are pretty much a motion based update to the classic arcade game Track & Field. The repetitive motions are surprisingly fun and you can genuinely get worn out and tired from playing this game. After completing circuits, the game prompts you to take a break. Heed this warning; my arms are still sore while I’m typing this!

I can firmly advise renting this game. At the very least, it’s worth a Saturday afternoon of being silly with your friends.
