This is a tough call for me, because as good as Metroid is, I haven’t played a traditional FPS with the Wii controls. And I would expect that I would feel that the Wii remote is more fun, while the mouse is easier accuracy. It would be fun to be able to play the same game on a PC and a Wii and compare the two.

On a side note, one of my “other” favorite control schemes is two-fisting N64 controllers in Goldeneye and Perfect Dark - so much better than dual thumbsticks on one controller.

Ooh - forgot about that entirely! Although I never played enough to master controls this way, it was great fun to try. That said, I’m sticking in the (mouse and keyboard) > (wii controls) > (dual analog) camp for now.

    Mouse and keeboard.

    Very close.

I haven’t played that many fps’s(MP3 was probably my first) but I have got to say I like wiimote over everything else. My recent trails in computer FPS have shown me that even though mouse and keyboard may be more accurate the wiiremote is alot more fun. My first choice would have been the wii zapper but there haven’t really been any full games that I’ve tried(like Medal of Honor Heroes 2) that really use the wii zapper in a good way. You can tell in that game that they just tacked on a wii zapper control scheme late in development and didn’t make that great an effort. well hopefully there will be some games designed for it in th future.

Nothing can beat the accuracy of the keyboard and mouse but I would take the wiimote over dual analogs any day.

I’m going with mouse and keyboard for now. The only shooter type game I’ve played is RE4 and not having a way to strafe is annoying. Do the Wii specific shooters have a strafe?

  7. NeuroMan42 says...

FPS games still are the domain of Keyboard and Mouse, BUT the control setup from Metroid Prime 3 is damn close to perfect. Scott is just crack smoking if he thinks that a regular Controller is better then the MP3 controls. ;)

    DS

I’m torn between keyboard/mouse and Wiimote/nunchuck. They’re both equally effective in my mind. I guess I’ll go with Wiimote.

  10. Soup says...

I went with Keyboard & Mouse. Don’t get me wrong, I love FPS games on the Wii, but there is the intial physical stress when starting. For the first couple of days of Metroid Prime 3, I had quite a sore arm after play sessions. Eventually I did find a style that didn’t involve keeping my arm elevated and parallel to the ground all the time.

Secondly, A keyboard just has more buttons, offering more selection methods and/or commands. While this may not be necessary to make a great game, lack of buttons certainly makes some great games harder to port (CoD4, anyone?).

  11. Marcus says...

While Soup does have a good point with the amount of buttons, I still find using the Wiimote/nunchuck much easier because you fingers are already on the buttons moulded around the controls.
I’ve always felt uneasy with a keyboard because I had to check where my fingers where every so often because they would sometimes slip onto a different key, and thus, throw a granade instead of shoot (for example).

However, the point and click approach is ten times better that dual analogue, and I would know. I was a professional at Perfect Dark before the Wii, but when I go back and play it now (its hooked up to my bedroom TV), I feel that is unplayable. The ONLY pro to dual analogue is strafing.

  12. Liraco says...

Mouse and keyboard are awesome in general but I really like the speed and precision the wiimote pointer gives me for popping headshots (most noticeable for me at the moment with RE4:Wii which is awesome).

  13. Dustin says...

I don’t think this is a fair poll because we’re comparing two different things. Personally I *hate* playing games with a keyboard. I started my gaming with the NES controller and the keyboard just feels wrong. Aside from that, the mouse is the quickest and most accurate way to turn, point and shoot.

But you can’t use a keyboard and mouse to play a console shooter. Out of the consoles, I feel the wiimote/nunchuck is the best option but on the keyboard/mouse is better if you’re on the computer.

  14. InvisibleMan says...

I still believe in the superiority of the Wii remote + Nunchuck, based on my experience with Metroid Prime Corruption… problem is, it appears like I’m the only one! All my favorite FPS’es will never be available with that control scheme, I’m afraid…

  15. deepthought says...

    m/kb by far.

oh- and you can use a m/kb with consoles- the xbox had adaptors for that. still waiting for the 360 adaptor…

and it was actually comfortable- kb in lap, laser mouse on couch beside me.

The advantage of kb/m is why I buy games I actually want to compete at for my pc (orange box, BF2) and games I’m more casual about (R6: Vegas) for console.

  16. burndive says...

Nothing beats a good ol’ keyboard and mouse for precision, but I didn’t have much trouble adapting to the MP3 scheme: I just had to learn to turn my view before heading around a corner.

  17. Paul says...

Mouse and keyboard. The wii is a nice step for consoles, but I don’t think the control schemes are there yet. And yes, I own MP3.

  18. David says...

I voted for Wii Remote & Nunchuk, because I find them to be a lot of fun. As for accuracy, keyboard & mouse are still tops, but that’s mostly because I have over ten years of experience using that scheme!

  19. KillerHeroes says...

Keyboard and mouse is the ideal. The Wiimote/nunchuck control is the next best best thing. Playing Metroid Prime 3 on advanced setting just felt so natural. Lock one/free aiming is also genius.

  20. DocOctorok says...

I’d be up for a little Half-Life Wii Edition. Or better yet, Jedi Knight.

  21. GlitchCog says...

    Other.
The best first person shooter controls were for Doom. Just keyboard, no mouse.
Ctrl = Strafe, Shift = Run, Space = Door, Alt = Fire
    Everything since has been crap.

  22. adam says...

I suck with analog controllers(ps3 & xbox360), so i grew up hating fps games, the contrls where stupid and gave me head aches watching the gameplay, i never undastood why one analog controled my movement and the other controlled what i was shooting at.

so iahted games like goldeneye and halo, but when i played redsteel for wii, iahd finally found my place among fps players

so nothing beats the wiimote, all i ahte to do is point and shoot and your dead, its simple but has a lot of depth to it!
