Poll – Wii and HD
Tuesday, November 27th, 2007 at 4:36pm by David
During the last installment of Infendo Radio, Scott talked about how much he liked the graphics for Super Mario Galaxy, but he wished that Nintendo had gone to at least 720P with Wii. Of the Wii setups I’ve seen, the majority are hooked up to standard definition TVs and game enjoyment was just as good there as it was on an HD widescreen. What do you think?
Do you miss Wii's lack of HD?

I’m sure if I had an HD-TV I might be a bit upset that Nintendo isn’t really supporting HD as much as they could, but I don’t have one. So meh.

I voted yes… though i stand by my thought that HD is not necessary, i i also think it would be nice to have it. Im happy with MP3/Galaxy graphics… now devs need to start applying them to games and i’ll be happen with quality graphics for Wii. Sure, there’s no need to go as far as 360, but there is no way they can be as low as PS2… how about Wii level devs? Think about it =0.

The poll is flawed. How can we ” Miss” The Wii’s lack of HD? It never HAD it in the first place to miss it. It should be ” Would you like it IF the Wii had HD ” or something like that. How do we miss something that was not there?
Anyways, of COURSE I would like it if the Wii had HD graphics. Why not? There is no reason that having BETTER visuals could possibly be a BAD thing.
Is it the end of the would that the Wii is SD? no.
But it WOULD be cool if it ran at at least 780p.
now… back to the wonderful Super Mario !

While i do wish they went for 780p, I have an HD TV and use the Wii’s component cables with it for the 480p and there is an improvement. While not quite what it could be, its still nice. I honestly cant complain.
Besides, if I was really that hard up for graphics, id buy a 360.

i wish i even had an HDTV

I’m getting an HDTV early next year and I am scared it will look like trash.
November 27th, 2007 at 7:38 pm
Retodd…. WHAT will look like trash?
The Wii?
No. It looks good on HD widescreen.
Just not as good as it could have been in 780 p or anything, but still nice.

I own a 1080p 40″ Samsung LCD and have a Wii hooked up to it by component and I can’t complain. Sure I’ll buy an X360 or PS3 in the next couple of months, but as of now up-converted DVDs (1080i) and 480p Wii make me happy.
It’s not about the graphics, it’s about the fun one has while playing videogames right?
November 27th, 2007 at 8:36 pm
i have a regular television, and i’m perfectly happy.
November 27th, 2007 at 8:36 pm
I would say a tiny yes and a big no.
November 27th, 2007 at 8:44 pm
I technically can’t miss Wii HD if it never had it, but I do kind of resent the fact that gorgeous games like Super Mario Galaxy and Metroid Prime 3: Corruption aren’t given the resolution they deserve. But it’s futile to discuss this topic. Nintendo made their decision and there’s nothing we can do about it. I still enjoy the games, HD or not.

Not so much the video, more the no opitcal sound.
It still looks good using component on a 42″viera.
But sound is what i live for.

When I can find a Toshiba 1080P 50″ HDTV for 1000, THEN I’ll complain about lack of HD.
Until then, my 9 year old SDTV works just fine.
November 27th, 2007 at 9:34 pm
Sure, a higher res would be nice but I fall into the category Nintendo was thinking about when they made the Wii: not a single Hi-def TV. Heck, none of my 3 TVs are even widescreen or have S-video (but the size is definitely quite nice as is the quality).
Maybe on the Wii 2 (or the Nintendo W00t or what have you) we can bash Nintendo for not getting with the times but as it stands, there’s still a way to go before even 720 becomes standard.

Keep in mind that if the Wii supported HD, it would have a more powerful CPU/GPU, more RAM and texture memory and cost a LOT more. That would mean it would probably be selling less and not doing nearly as well as it is.
Do you STILL miss HD?
I don’t. What I miss is developers who will work to get the most of the SD graphics we have. Clearly many are not doing so.

Sometimes, other times it looks just fine. I think it mostly has to do with early games vs. more recent games. Also, I’ve played games on the PC usually with just 1024×768 resolution settings and I’d still see “jaggies” so I can assume it’s because of the size of the HDTV amplifying the issue. It’s nice to have but I’m not generally that bothered.

Surprisingly I don’t miss HD as much as I thought I would, but the lack of good antialiasing is a real bummer. Though I haven’t noticed this in Super Mario Galaxy like I did in other games, so perhaps it’s not a hardware limitation after all?
I really do miss real digital surround though. It’s too bad Nintendo didn’t see fit to include an optical audio port and incorporate real 5.1 surround sound on this box.

I voted “No”, as in “I don’t miss it”. I have my Wii hooked up to my HDTV with component cables, and I have a 360 hooked up with an HDMI cable. While I can telll the difference, the games I like on Wii (Super Mario Galaxy) are designed with 480p/widescreen in mind, so I don’t see the benefit of upping the resolution.
Plus, when you consider what you would have to sacrifice for the extra resolution, it is really not worth it for this system: longer development process, higher prices, developers concentrating on the graphics more than on gameplay, etc… Oh, and I would have to buy yet another $50 HDMI cable!
November 28th, 2007 at 11:23 am
I don’t think HD even looks good enough. I demand that my games look like real life!!!
No, seriously, what’s the deal with everyone whining about graphics? If you are that unhappy about it, then you are totally missing the point of video games. They are an art form. Can you enjoy a film from the 50s, even though the camera quality and special effects lack the technology of today? Some people can’t. I can because I focus mostly on the story.
Case in point, I think sometimes people get caught up in Twilight Princess’ graphics, and automatically declare it the best Zelda game to date, but I can name a couple more that I was way more attached to because of the story, not because of graphics.
Although, I sort of get attached to some of the older games DUE TO their inferior graphics, example, the very distinct look of Mario 64, Ocarina of Time, and Starfox 64.

@invisibleman,
“Oh, and I would have to buy yet another $50 HDMI cable!”
Check out Monoprice. You can get nice HDMI cables for like $7 there. Mine work great!

Yes, I wish the Wii had 720p as well as an enforced 16×9 policy. I’m fine with Nintendo not emphasizing power, I can deal with less polygons, lighting, and simpler textures then the 360/PS3 but I really would’ve liked having the sharpness of HD.

I dont know I think its time to catch up, its almost 2008 everything is HD from TV’s to DVD players to music to Video Games to cable and satellite. I dont even see square TV’s sold anymore let alone cathode ray tube TV’s. I just bought a 50″ plasma just for gaming and Wii looks great on it. I mean at 50″ inches I am sitting 9 feet back so it looks great and is still huge. Regardless of what I just bought all the TV’s in my house have been HD for the past 5 years! But still I have the component hooked up and a surround system and everything sounds great! Mario and Metroid are great out of more then 2 speakers.
I just hope for the next system Nintendo goes HD (which means all games will be 16:9 as well, YAY!) Nintendo makes the graphic power close to the competitors. Lets face it Microsoft and Sony will always have superior visuals. Three I would like at least…AT LEAST 5GB of internal memory. Hard drives I dont care about but give me more memory.
Yes I wish Wii was HD but oh well…52 games later I am having so much fun with Wii that HD or graphics or whatever does not even enter into my mind. Its just too much fun!
To tell you the truth if you are thinking of getting an HD TV and are hesitating don’t. Wii looks great on it, sounds even better if you hook up a surround system. I bought a plasma because I wanted plasma but don’t buy a plasma for games, I hate to say it because I love plasmas but I already have a burn in problem even though the TV has burn in reduction AND a video game mode! You don’t notice the burn in luckily when playing the game on during transition times like loading screens. But I suggest getting a LCD for games 110%!
