TWEWY is one of my favourite games on the DS. I think I’ve played through it 4-5 times. The World Ends With you goes under Its A Wonderful World in Japan. Picked up the ltd edition DS + game when I was over there this past summer.
I dont think Professor Layton is underated, i think in wider gaming communities that it is not appreciated as appropriately as what we would but it is the best DS game i have ever played! Therefore it is my right to vote for it as it is understated in some areas.
Its music is flawless and the creativity gives it a boost
Most of those are hardly underrated.
Heck, even Rune Factory has a strong following.
Though I must admit, if I didn’t have to put up Rocket Slime on that list, I would’ve definitely voted GTA Chinatown Wars or Retro Gaming Challenge.
Chinatown Wars was underrated by several critics and users… but it was a solid game. Too many people that didn’t like the GTA-1-London-2 style ripped apart that game in reviews. It’s kind of unfair, it’s like letting a person who hates jazz listen and critique to a jazz interpretation of their favorite song.
Retro Gaming Challenge is loved, but hardly much knew about it. Word needs to get out about that game. That game’s friggin’ AWESOME.
None of the above.
The great Giana Sisters. BUY NOW
Worms: Open Warfare 2 is OVERRATED. I bought it because I heard how good local multiplayer was. When I tried it, it was broken beyond repair. First, their was a 5 second lag between the 2 DS’s. Then suddenly, the game gremlin did something weird. We played against each other, and then without us discovering it first, we played single player against the computer. But we didn’t noticed first, so for a couple of turns, we actually thought we still played against each other. But WHY couldn’t they make a turn based game work between two DS’s? F…… waste of money
Trace Memory (Another Code for you UK-based fellows) was incredible and deep. Lots of secrets to find, intuative puzzles, and the perfect companion to join you through the lonely mansion. Also, the backstory is chilling yet thrilling. Definately my top pick for almost any DS game.
I hear there’s a new one coming out for the Wii. Any news on that by chance?
Sonic Chronicles was Sonic’s first RPG and it got a lot of flack for being a Sonic game when in fact Bioware did a good job of developing the game. When Sonic goes into the Twilight Cage, there is a lot of similarity in art style to the Mass Effect series. This game is highly undereated and I recommend everyone pick it up.
i think the wording is wrong in the poll title. i think what is meant is ‘overlooked’. a few of my friends say the same thing you do that seen the poll. but i think the intent is ‘overlooked’. but in any case, i think layton is pretty popular, so maybe it shouldn’t be there on those grounds either. the wii poll had a similar issue, like for example, world of goo. besides, layton is a choice put originally on the poll by the poll makers. you shouldn’t fault the voters if the choice is there.
underrated should mean the game itself didn’t get good scores, but should have been better scores, which a lot of these titles wouldn’t quality. this is of course independent of sales, or popularity. so yeah, i would say a lot of these titles are ‘overlooked’ rather than ‘underrated’.
btw, i am one of those many people that missed contact. i wonder to this day how that game plays. maybe i should pick it up after all these years…….anyone that’s played that game, let me know what you think about it.
Warioware D.I.Y. If you like to create, this work of genius gives you the most powerful easy-to-use game-making toolbox in handheld software history–Then teaches you how to use it via a truly funny, entertaining tutorial with Wario as your obnoxious co-pupil. If you stick with it, you can play a polished, professional-looking Warioware made entirely of your own designs, but the creation process is where the fun really lies.
TWEWY is one of my favourite games ever from any system. It didn’t hook me right away. It started a bit slowly for me and the two-screen action took some getting used to but at some point, it took off, I was very glad I stuck with it.
It’s probably not underrated, per sey, (I believe it actually had pretty favourable reviews) but I do know of a lot of people who wouldn’t even try it because of the dual screen play and any time I rec’d it to someone ran in and said “No, it’s too hard!”
TWEWY is one of the best games of this generation, of ALL the systems.
If you are even just a *tiny* bit curious, try it.
But yeah, I’m still not sure it’s underrated… its pretty much established now as a cult favourite and frequently turns up in top 10 lists.
I still play it now. the end game is… quite large…. if you are going for 100% completion. You could potentially play it for years. In fact, I have been, on and off! Crazy…
The World Ends With You, the first game by Square Enix I actually liked, and enjoyed till the end. I even went out of my way to buy the soundtrack for it from their website. But I would vote for Contact many times over for being very fun too.
I definitely got to go with Feel The Magic: XX/XY. That game is so fun it’s ridiculous. It kind of reminds me of a cross between the gaming style of WarioWare with the visual / music style of Space Channel 5. =)
I’m going to say that TWEWY is actually one of the most OVER rated games for the DS. It’s a clusterfuck of ideas that just don’t fit very well, from the battles, the repetitive nature of the story, the asspulls in the story, the unlikeable characters (I’m looking at you, Joshua) the horrible map system, unnecessary pins, a brand system that’s useless outside the times you are forced to use it, the lack of variety in the missions and areas, and more. The soundtrack is pretty good, and if you don’t mind the negative, I can see why people can like it – but it’s still immensely overrated.
@BlueRocks
How is it underrated AND overlooked if it got sequels (that released into the US) and even got a Wii version?
It may be underrated (though sounds improbable considering that it got fair reviews when released), or it may be overlooked (though if sales encourage imports, the sequels shouldn’t have been released here if it was overlooked) – but it’s highly improbably that it’s both.
It’s not mainstream, if that’s what you mean. But it did have a rather large cult following – which still means big sales (Katamari Damacy had nothing but cult love, but it still sold big).
I would say the first five titles on this list don’t belong here! They were hardly overlooked or overrated… The rest of the list is definitely a collection of the best games on DS that did not have a huge following from consumers, even though they deserved it.
My top three would be the Etrian Odyssey series, GTA: Chinatown Wars, and Dark Spire, but I gave my vote to Etrian Odyssey just because those games are my personal favorites on this system, and I’m still playing them!
Interestingly, I own about half of these titles, and the only one I haven’t liked so far was The World Ends With You (I would call that one overrated!)

this is a tough vote. Speaking of which, is there any other life forms out there?

I don’t think the voters know what ‘underrated’ means if Layton is #1. If there’s a movie about a DS game, it’s not underrated. Morons.
@Ross: Agreed. Prof. Layton is hardly underrated by any means, critically acclaimed on three continents and appreciated by fans and devs alike.
I am surprised at the apparent exclusion of the Etrian Odyssey titles in this list…

personally i think the more obscure the title, that has a somewhat cult following, the more it should be in this poll.

Gotta go with The World Ends With You. Such a fun game. That or Professor Layton.

Almost all games on the list are overrated. Rune Factory is my choice. Contact is underrated too.

Infinite Space has been in my DS since July. I play for 30 miutes every night before bed. It is awesome!
I definitely got to go with Feel The Magic: XX/XY. That game is so fun it’s ridiculous. It kind of reminds me of a cross between the gaming style of WarioWare with the visual / music style of Space Channel 5. =)

Runefactory was my choice. Underrated and overlooked.
Retro Game Challenge, WEWY, Feel The Magic and Rub Rabbits.

why isn’t lost magic on here, that game was amazing
DBZ SSW2 is the best DBZ fighter around.
But it never got a sequel or anything. : (
