Nintendo says “no thanks” to Leipzig Game Convention 2008

Blue Ocean strategy at work or Nintendo shunning the hardcore? If you’re an Infendo regular you know where I stand on that loaded question, but regardless Nintendo has opted out of the Leipzig Games Convention this year.

I think they’re going to nuke us at E3. There’d be no point in holding anything back for Leipzig, so going to smaller events would get the word out to more people. Reggie better not disappoint us.

I thought the Blue Ocean strategy WAS to shun the hardcore?

No, the blue ocean strategy is “stop neglecting everyone else besides the hardcore”. The jealousy of the hardcore players notwithstanding, they’ve gotten an absurd amount of fan service from Nintendo on the Wii.

“The company intends to start a road show in Germany upon the conclusion of E3 2008, rather than attending ‘one central fair’”.

I see nothing wrong with Nintendo opting to do a road tour instead of a conference.

why did you just create such a loaded question statement?
nintendo said in that same short article that they are opting out in favor of a road show, which honestly would reach more people and media would still get their videos, write-ups, but less travelling for everybody who wants to see nintendos games.
its just as core and casual supporting as a central fair.
i love central events for the hype it creates, but them not going is nothing against it or them or fans.

How is it loaded? Blue Ocean IS open road mini-events across a wide area. That’s what they’re doing, and I support and encourage that.
On the other hand, I couldn’t resist a smack at the morons who will see this announcement and continue the ignorant cry that Nintendo is “shunning the real gamers.”
If it didn’t come out that way, oh well. This is a good thing, bottom line.

I agree with Jack (The Pro-Gamer One as I like to call him as a nickname) with this. Nintendo realized a long time ago with that central shows my be good for the geeks; but it does nothing to pull in new gamers (and make fewer people go against the medium itself). Even if the ESA decided to make E3 a full public trade show; it still won’t pull in new gamers. Nintendo did this road show thing in Japan and it worked rather well in my opinion. Much more effective than doing TGS or doing a Space World.

They’re two different things, though. Shows like E3 and Space World are where you make your big announcements, and tours like they’ve been doing with Wii Fit and previous Wii products are for getting the word out about products whose release is imminent.
Last year’s Leipzig was the second, so why not spread it out across the entire country instead of just one town for a couple days?
