New Pokémon Video Games Shatter U.S. Sales Records

Pokémon Black Version and Pokémon White Version Combine to Sell More Than 1 Million in a Single Day

Two new Pokémon™ video games went on sale on March 6 and promptly shattered all previous U.S. Pokémon sales records. The Pokémon Black Version and Pokémon White Version games for the Nintendo DS™ family of systems became the fastest-selling Pokémon video games of all time, selling more than 1.08 million units after just one day of availability. That surpasses the previous one-day sales record of more than 780,000 set by the Pokémon Diamond Version and Pokémon Pearl Version games in April 2007.

“Longtime Pokémon fans are attracted to the new Pokémon, new battle systems and a new region to explore, while newcomers enjoy the ability to jump in and have fun right away,” said Charlie Scibetta, Nintendo of America’s senior director of Corporate Communications. “These sales numbers illustrate the continued strength of the Nintendo DS family of systems. Already established as the nation’s best-selling video game platform of all time, the installed base of more than 47 million makes it the ideal hand-held for developers to reach a huge gaming-focused target audience.”

Pokémon Black Version and Pokémon White Version feature more than 150 new Pokémon for players to catch, train and battle. The never-before-seen Unova region gives players a whole new world to explore. For the first time in the series, in-game environments change with the four seasons. The games also introduce Triple Battles and Rotation Battles, which give players even more choices when battling.

Soooooo doomed! 🙂 And the nice part is…This game deserves its success. It’s outstanding. It won’t change the minds of anyone who doesn’t enjoy the franchise, but for fans…Man, oh, man is this thing polished.

  2. gamecollector44 says:

I might just be the biggest moron out there, but I’m still not getting what you mean by ‘doomed’ xP

  3. Joe says:

It’s been a while since I’ve played a Pokemon game but I’ve been playing Pokemon White and man what a really great game. Pick it up if you haven’t already.

“I might just be the biggest moron out there, but I’m still not getting what you mean by ‘doomed’ xP”

He’s being sarcastic because of all of the negative comments from Michael Patcher and other media talking heads about how the iPhone app store is going to put Nintendo out of business.

  4. Chelsea says:

    Joe’s got it.

    Side note: I’m a girl. :]

  5. Caleb says:

Curses! All this talk about how great Pokemon Black and White are is starting to erode the wall if resistance I built up. Can they really be that much improved since I played through Pearl version?

  6. Joe says:

    Sorry about that Chelsea. 🙂

  7. Richard says:

    Caleb —

I’ll have a full review up soon, but in the meantime:

It’s still the same experience with all the familiar elements, but everything about it– graphics, sound, story, pacing–represents the best this series has ever been. If you liked Pearl, you’ll love this one.

  8. Caleb says:

Thanks for the preview, Richard. I very well may end up getting this one.

  9. Mohan says:

    Huge numbers!

  10. CrusherX says:

Wow, thats nice to hear. I ordered both versions, still waiting for them to arrive.

  11. Eugene says:

    @chelsea
be sure to update with your initial impressions. I just picked up the game today and have yet to put it in my DS.

  12. Arjen says:

    Ooh. Stylish quote, that.

“Iwata can only dab his tears away with fistfuls of money as he watches the entire company go down in flames!”

I hope you guys are keeping track of Infendo’s best quotes.

  13. andrepd says:

yeah, nintendo’s death is being announced for more that 15 years now, with n64, gamecube, virtualboy… 8th time is the time, right?

    right?

off-topic: you should create a “bio” page with staff bios. I can hardly distinguish you guys (and girl) apart!

  14. Chelsea says:

    andrepd,

I was thinking we needed something exactly like that. Forwarded the idea on and Blake’s got something in the works for a central staff page. With any luck, soon we’ll be able to define our identities apart from an amorphous Infendo collective. ;]

  15. Caleb says:

You make Infendo sound like the Borg, Chelsea.

  16. InvisibleMan says:

I want to see Apple try to fit a Pokémon game in one of their iPhones! Yeah, that will be the day…

  17. 6937601297984 says:

“Maybe they should just make a sequel to Doom since they know the subject so well.”

    That is a terrible joke.

  18. Chelsea says:

Since pleasing 6937601297984 is my sole mission in life, I will impale myself upon a Nintendo DS stylus, as I richly deserve.
