Miyamoto reassures graphic whores that Nintendo will embrace HD in near future

In case there was ever any doubt, says Miyamoto: “I don’t think there’s anything wrong with pretty graphics, and if I’m a consumer that has an HDTV, I’d want to be able to play my games with nice graphics too,” he told Industry Gamers on Friday. “And I think as we’ve seen the penetration rates for HDTV increase, we’re going to see video games and Nintendo’s games move along in step with the progression of technology.”

So once the majority of consumers own HDTVs, Nintendo will support high resolution graphics. But never more than gameplay, added Miyamoto. “What I don’t think is necessarily true is that the graphics itself is something that’s going to make the gameplay experience better. So we’re still going to focus on the gameplay, but we’ll take advantage of the technology as it comes out.”

Sounds like Miyamoto isn’t following the blog Sean Malstrom. Sean said HD games are for babies and Nintendo would be wise to make more games like WiiPlay.

  2. Mr.cranky says:

My brother makes fun of me and likes to say that great motion controlls and fun games are for babies 😀 if u wana be manly, u have to play hd shooters that are brown and gray 😀

  3. Attilio says:

Miyamoto has a good point. Why waste time and money developing HD compatible games and consoles when only a handful of the world population has HD TVs. No wonder Nintendo makes a profit right from the beginning, they understand every aspect of the gaming industry.

@Mr.cranky, no offense, but your brother is a fool if he is being serious about that.

  4. Derek B. says:

I’m tired of the “pretty games inherently sacrifice gameplay” mentality. Pretty games often play quite well. It’s not as if games must be one or the other—the best are both pretty and fun to play. I’m not sure why video game attributes are now considered so polarized and exclusive.

To be honest, opposing HD gaming simply because Nintendo hasn’t embraced it yet is absurd, and the irony will be clear when Nintendo finally releases an HD console—the same people who condemned HD gaming this generation will drool over Mario’s HD galaxies, Samus’ HD caverns and Link’s HD forests, and they’ll praise Nintendo for making the move…a generation late.

Wii is a great system, but like any console, it isn’t perfect. The piss-poor graphics so many of its games half-heartedly try to pass as adequate are, with the arguable exception of its half-hearted leap into online connectivity, the system’s biggest drawback.

After all, having a big HD television and wanting your fun-to-play games to look good on them isn’t a crime.

  5. Mr.cranky says:

@ Attilio. My bro not serious about that 😀 i brought over metroid prime trilogy over his place and i was complaining about madworld, excitebots, conduit, and deadly creatures selling like crap. And the whole gameinformer thing that pepole said i was stupid for only wii. And he said that metroid prime and madworld for babies because its not a 360 hd game thats brown n gray. Making fun of the hardcore for being to fickle and being whiny babies 😀 i made a big comment to explain because my bro read your comment

    Yes, you are 100 % correct, Derek B .
These fanBoys are getting more and more desperate all the time, it seems.

    Dear FanBoys….

    ______NEWS FLASH_______

    Guess WHAT?

You CAN have BOTH a great looking current gen HD game that PLAYS great as well. So saying that the Wii has “fun playing games”, and because of that it “makes up for” the poor visuals and poor sound is just plain ignorant.
Why not have BOTH? Oh, and maybe good online as well? Or will a fanBoy respond saying that poor online is ” OK on Wii because Nintendo has fun simple games ,so poor graphics and poor online is acceptable”…lol

  7. Brian says:

Wii HD drumroll… here we go!

  8. mr.cranky says:

the only fanboys i hate are the hd fanboys. i’ll hug a sony fanboy way before a hd one.

  9. guttertalk says:

    @Derek:

I’m not sure whom you’re quoting, but I can flip that around and say I’m tired of gamers who say that the Wii can’t have good games because its Standard TV and underpowered. All Miyamoto said was that HD graphics didn’t *necessarily* result in better games.

I don’t think anyone opposes HD, but I think people get tired of its importance being overstated.

The problem with HD games is that the graphics consume a huge part of the game budget and are largely why an HD game costs 2-4 times as much as a Wii game. From a business perspective, Nintendo’s decision makes sense: If HDTV penetration is not widespread, why incur the costs? Microsoft’s costs have been so significant that they took at least 3 times as long as Nintendo to being profitable on their consoles.

Miyamoto is explaining why Nintendo doesn’t see that HD games is a necessity at this time. He’s not bashing HD.

Wanting good HD games isn’t a crime, and no one of significance is saying that it is. There’s no need to play victim.

  10. Poochy says:

Did any of you bother reading what Mr. Miyamoto said?

“And I think as we’ve seen the penetration rates for HDTV increase,”

He’s basically saying the penetration rates of HDTVs have increased, meaning that Nintendo is actually becoming serious about HD at this point.

  11. Mohan says:

I don’t care if the system/game is HD as long as it’s a fun game!

  12. Jeff says:

I agree with guttertalk. Derek tried to set up a strawman. A lot of the current gamers, while seeing value in HD graffix, don’t want to pay a $200 increase and a $10 increase per game just to get them. That’s not to say we’re “against them” but we get put on that side just because we questioned their value in 2005.

As hardware prices drop, and component prices drop, of course Nintendo will get an HD Graffix card (possibly a ridiculously efficient one, considering their phat lewt this gen). They just didn’t think tanking their company like Sony did for the Ps3 was the right move.

  13. finland says:

Just like the CD. Nintendo IS too late with HD gaming. It’s just unnaceptable that Wii games look the best on SD tv’s you can’t even by anymore.

  14. Jeff says:

“Just like the CD. Nintendo IS too late with HD gaming. ”

More like Sony and MS are too late with motion controls. It amazes me how nobody ever talks about Nintendo as if they actually do represent most of the industry and gamers, even when they control most of the former and have most of the latter.

you talk as if the door is shut on HD graphics forever and people will say retarded things like “Sony invented HD graphics.”

HD graphics are cheap now. You are talking about a raw technology that anybody can have. Nintendo will have an HD card in their next console. I think my wristwatch will have an HD graphics card too. But they won’t be as important as they are now. And even now they aren’t that important.

  15. finland says:

You missed the point dude. Still creating SD games in 2010 for HD tvs is absurd at best. Motion, lotion. The wiis best games use regular controls anyways.

  16. Jeff says:

Did they say that, or are you hearing voices?

  17. Wii Will says:

I don’t care if the graphics are good or mediocre…..
As long as I play Nintendo games 🙂

  18. John says:

Im an HDTV owner and am excited about Mr. Miyamoto’s announcement.

  19. John says:

BTW, Blake is a wii-tard to call anyone a “graphics whore” for wanting HD games.

  20. Phil Myth says:

I’m with Derek – never understood why wanting HD gaming was seen as a bad thing. I love my Wii and the games are awesome, but they would be even better with crisper visuals.

Anyways it’s good to see Nintendo aren’t dismissing HD completely, I think this confirms that ‘Wii 2’, whenever it arrives, will be HD compatible, and that’s good news so far as I’m concerned.

  21. Adam Wii says:

Derek and Phil you completely miss the point. Nintendo *never* said HD games suck so we won’t make them. They simply said the truth – the majority of folks did not yet own an HDTV when Wii came out. So why drive up the price of the system for a difference that the majority cannot even see?? Likewise, Nintendo *never* said good graphics suck so we won’t make them. Wii graphics are great, just not HD. A so-called “HD” game with a stuttering framerate is not acceptable.
