Does Wii deliver? What’s the best Mario Game? Best Zelda game? Best Brawl character? Agree to disagree, say Scott, Kyle and Blake. Enjoy the show, everyone. We’ll return in two weeks time with the party that should be episode 100.

I agree with Scott 100%, I thought I was the only one! Bottom line, the Wii is a success in terms of drawing in new gamers ( I actually stopping playing games after N64, and was sucked in by the Wii). However, the Wii is not yet a “success” in executing the new control scheme.

I decided to buy the Wii after hearing Nintendo talk about revolutionizing gaming with their new control scheme. Now, one year later I’m still finding myself preferring the last gen control scheme. While there are some neat things the Wii mote can do, I think its telling that Wii Sports is still the best implementation of the new control method (as far as bringing in an immersive experience).

Hopefully, this second quarter of 08, will bring in the much needed new Nintendo IP’s to really show developers what the Wiimote is truly capable of.

I’m going to phone you guys all the way here in Hong Kong to wish you happy 100 shows! Watch out for it :D

In response to Fes’s comment about Spectator Mode in Brawl . . . I’m pretty sure they’re just recorded matches that you watch.

That doesn’t mean there aren’t compute players in there, but I don’t think it’s just the computer.

There’s this Captain Falcon player who spends the whole time taunting and then jumping off to kill himself. Unless Nintendo programmed that in, which I doubt, there’s got to be some “real” people in the matches.

Good show, see yall in two weeks.

Great show as always. Some comments:

Wii as a revolution: I loved how Scott said “I can play this anywhere” when refering to Brawl and other exclusive Nintendo games. I understand the control scheme is the same as GCN, but I’d like to see you fit a Wii disc into a GameCube. The fact of the matter is, all these games are now Wii games…period.

The issue I think people are having is that they expect all games to have motion control. This would be terrible. Just like drinking, motion controls should be done in moderation. If the game feels right to add it, then add it. The Wii allows developers to utilize the motion controls if they want. It was never an ultimatum.

My feeling is this, if they wanted to distance themselves from the GCN control setup, they wouldn’t have put 4 ports on the top. Obviously they see that this control scheme can still be applied to Wii games. Or as Blake put it, allows multiple options for the users.

Anyways, no matter how Nintendo makes their games, either via Wii-mote only controls or GCN controls, it’s still a Wii game, and you will NOT be able to play it on any other console.

Congrats on your 100 episode in a few weeks guys. Appreciate the laughs and info.

I completely agree with daverge. The Wii has been a big financial success and has put Nintendo firmly back on top where they once ruled. But as far the Wii being a success as some revolutionary console with revolutionary controls, I’d go so far as to say it’s been pretty disappointing. I too say Wii Sports (glorified tech demo) is still the best use of the controls and MP3 is the only other title I think that uses them very well. Most of the games they feel slapped on, and even the best Wii games (SMG, Zelda:TP, SSBB) don’t even really utilize them much if at all (see SSBB).

Sure the Wii has some great games, but I can’t say it’s revolutionary in any way, and I certainly don’t find myself wishing I had a Wiimote when I play “regularly” controlled games on the 360, PS3, or even the GameCube. Nor when I play those Wii games do I think “Man the Wiimote really puts this game over the top!”

And on a side note I think the Wii Zapper has become completely worthless.

I voted yes because this is the first time I’ve had so much fun with a games console since the N64 and Mario Kart. Nintendo has been pushing all of their top franchises out very quickly, to the point where I haven’t had a chance to even consider a 3rd party release (Okami stands to change that).

The point that Scott makes about the games being playable anywhere is that you could literally have made Brawl for Xbox360 and it would have played just fine, the new controller is irrelevant with this release. I also agree that by having so many different control options available says that the wiimote+nunchuck isn’t all that was cracked up to be. I’d argue that the pointer is more useful than motion sensing.

What I’m more disappointed with now is how conservative Nintendo was on this console go-around. It was the right choice considering the “failure” of Gamecube relative to the PS2 but now that it is a smash hit, it’d be great if it had better online, HD graphics and was more media centric. I truly wish it could play DVDs for example.

I love Star Fox 64. I just love that type of on railes space shooter though. I played a lot of similiar games on my 3d0 as well.

Of course i’m also one of the guys who likes Star Fox Adventures a lot.

It’s ok not to like a game but don’t hate so much.

Similiarly Windwaker is a good game but I favor Twilight Princess much more. Zant, Midna, etc… bring more to the Zelda series, IMO, then has ever been brought. By far my favorite game in the series.

Gamers just have different opinions. I don’t try and force my opinion down other peoples thoats I just state it and don’t feel like listening to someone continously bash a game I like a lot. So please lighten up a little.

  12. Rushli0n says...

I guess my question is still there then…Was everyone expecting motion controls to be in every Wii title? Should they make every game to cater to the Wii-mote? Should developers not make a game for Wii simply because the Wii-mote “just doesn’t make sense” to use it for it’s control scheme?

On a side note: I truly think Nintendo is doing this as a slap in the face to all those who put down the GameCube as an inferior system. They are basically making Cube titles for the Wii (graphics, controls, etc), yet they are selling like gang-busters. Probably why they are making so many titles have multiple control schemes.

Simply put, Nintendo got away with selling an upgraded GameCube. But in all fareness, I love it.

  13. Guch says...

    I agree with Scott’s “sort-of” thing 100% as well.

Star Fox 64 is A GOOD GAME.

I agree with Blake that SMB3 is super awesome, but don’t agree that Sunshine was “overrated.”

@Paul: I was wondering about that, but now I understand why the options and stuff connects with that. I’ve done spectator once, and won, and never wanna do that again.

Congrats on the upcoming Ep. 100, I can’t wait.

  14. rokerovakero says...

Infendo seems to be the only site still “not getting” the Wii… guys, even Microsoft and Sony get it.

And the console is just the tip of the iceberg. Wii Fit seems to be the best explanation for the change. It’s getting a $40,000,000 marketing budget. times HAVE changed, so has Nintendo.

About StarFox 64, the game isn’t bad, the problem is that Starfox came out to show off the technical power of the FX chip, once everyone had polygons for their games, the game got stale and has stayed that way. Starfox Adventures showed that Starfox doesn’t really need to be in the ship, but forcing him into a game that was almost ready to go on sale made the franchise even lower expectations. Dinosaur Planet would have been another big nintendo ip, if they had not included fox in there.

If they wanna revitalize Star Fox, they need to make something like Tie Fighter from Lucas Arts from the 486 years, something that leave Fox INSIDE the ship and make it part of a big army with mistakes happening AGAIN (like the first one where you actually ran out of time for helping your team) not the Rambo of the Animal Kingdom with his fleet of friends never getting any action since he blows up everything first.

AND THIS FRANCHISE SCREAMS FOR AN AMERICAN DEVELOPER. and needs to be at least have a option to make it way harder.

  15. InvisibleMan says...

On the art style of the Zelda games:

I predict that ten years from now our children will be still playing Wind Waker on some new Nintendo platform, and that the other Zelda games will get a make-over using the Wind Waker “toon” art style. Twilight Princess in its current style will be unbearable to look at again!

  16. kyle says...

i don’t think its so much that we “don’t get” the Wii so much as we “got it” then “lost it”.

i got the DS and still fully get it today. and that said, Wii is still my favorite machine.

  17. Brian says...

Who sings the “Wiimote” song at the end of the podcast? That was great.
