Blake mentioned that he only checks out the highest and lowest average scores in Metacritic… I disagree, or at least that’s not my method: some of my most favorite games have always fallen in the 7.0 - 8.5 score average…
The reason, I believe, is that I like some challenge plus innovation in my games, and those tend to step on unfamiliar gaming territory that doesn’t appeal to some reviewers. Those reviewers will give a low score, and that will pull the average down to the 70’s.
What I do is I check the highest and lowest single reviews, if I’m interested in the type of game and I see it is getting “mediocre” scores… The actual review sometime tells a very different story, where the reviewer really liked the game but has to give it a less-than-perfect score because it is too tough for the average gamer or because he had difficulty with a new approach the developer had to gameplay.
