I believe the argument about Nintendo no longer caring about the “hardcore” is about Nintendo’s games, not third party. The whole “lack of third party” argument is a separate topic. So even though Madworld et al. are slated to come out next year, this answers nothing about what Nintendo is doing.

My two cents is that I don’t care. I’m more interested in Nintendo bringing out good games and really don’t care if they are listed as hardcore or not. A bad hardcore game is just as bad as a bad casual game.

My first encounter with a Kirby game was the Tilt n’ Tumble on the GameBoy Color (which I played in the first-generation GBA, actually, since I never owned a GB Color). That’s one of the best Kirby games, in my opinion…

    @ Paul
I think you are absolutely right in the distinction between third party and first party games. I didn’t take that into account in my segment because I was thinking more about the Wii as a whole and the “hardcore” games for it then just what Nintendo produces. Despite my segment I share the same opinion you do about just having Nintendo make good games, I played Wii Music the other day and thought it was just great so if that’s what Nintendo wants to keep producing then all power to them.

I think I should’ve been clear about “hardcore” titles. I don’t believe in the term. I think there are action games, RPGs, shmups, simulations, puzzles, etc, but I don’t think there’s any reason for one style of game to be considered “core” or “hardcore”. It just doesn’t make sense.

Other media/entertainment doesn’t consider people who only watch one (or a few) genres to be a “core” movie fan. Each genre tends to have a “core” audience.

A good RPG would be nice.

I think “Hardcore” really needs a definition. Is it defined by complexity? By subject matter? By time requirement?

Let me list some games I consider hardcore: No More Heroes, Zelda, Call of Duty, Pokemon, Madworld, Dangerous Creatures. (NOTE: No big games in spring? Isn’t Dangerous Creatures scheduled for February?)

Level of violence seems to be a factor, but it shouldn’t be. There are tons of extremely violent flash games (Tactical Assassin) that are not hardcore. There are plenty of complicated casual games (Diner Dash and it’s ilk.)

I guess it comes down to play time. Particularly play time in a single session. If you can sit down and have a complete experience in 10-20 minutes, it is a casual game. If one mission/level/segment of the game takes over an hour, it is hardcore.

That’s my take, anyway. Moving to another genre, Sitcoms are Casual, Lord of the Rings Director’s Cut movies are Hardcore.
