Having problems doing a system update on your 3DS? Here’s the solution!

“An error has occurred. Unable to update. The system will now be restarted.”

This message keeps popping up on my 3DS, despite getting a message on Sunday saying a system update, including an OK Go 3D video, is now available.

Checking the Nintendo support forums, it doesn’t seem like there’s a solution yet. Anyone else having this problem? Were you able to resolve it?

Solution found!  I fixed my 3DS using Nintendo’s instructions found here:

Click on System Menu Updates” and then “Error Message: An Error Occurred. Unable to Update

I was able to restore my 3DS back to automatically obtain an IP after the update and it was able to check for updates again with no errors.

    Ouch. Well, that’s a problem……………

  2. Chelsea says:

It’s not just you. This phenomenon has been dubbed the “Black Screen of Death”. And as of yet there is no readily identifiable way to consistently recreate it or solve it.

I assume Nintendo is working on a software fix for this. Who’s laughing now, early adopters? Haha! Ha… *looks at my 2 dimensional DS lite and weeps softly*

  3. LucasC666 says:

@Chelsea That’s a completely different thing, and it’s remedied by restarting the console.

  4. David says:

Solution! It’s posted in the article as an update.

Mine updated okay. Man, I hope they get a fix available to you soon!

  6. z-nut says:

My took forever to update, just like my wii, but five minists later, the bar magically filled in 30 seconds.

  7. DevinShadowV says:

Yeah there just blowing smoke I got the system update and didn’t have any problems after that

  8. Mohan says:

I didn’t get this error, but my friend did. So he just came over to my house and did the update and it worked fine.

I like the “I am Error” tag on this article.

    Glad everyone’s enjoying their 3DS!

I had no issues with mine. The update bar was slow for like a min or two but then filled up quickly.

  11. Hitokiri_Ace says:

Mine has had no issues as of yet. Battery life is my main concern. I’m going to have to do actual tests to see how long it will last. It seemed even sleep mode took a toll yesterday… though it wasnt fully charged, so I’ll have to see today.

I haven’t had an error but it looks like it’s been fixed which is good to see. I’ll be playing some SF IV online soon… I’m not very good so I’m sure it will be a beatdown for me for a while. lol

  13. Verius says:

The update bar was slow to begin with but was pretty speedy when it came through at the end. No FW issues yet.

@Hitokiri_Ace the battery is definitely the weak point of the 3DS (alongside a not so stellar launch lineup) although they say its cause of the parallax barrier that makes the 3D screen slightly dimmer so they need more power to brighten that screen up. Also its got a good horsepower increase from the DSi/DS Lite so that will drain batteries a bit more too.

Did not receive the error, thank god. Overall I am VERY VERY pleased with my first launch 3DS. All the haters can go eat one :-)

  15. POKEMONIKA says:

    That helped tremendously. thank you!

Ok, so if anyone is still looking at this forum. The only way I got my 3DS to even try to update was to go to protocol in my router’s settings and NOT choose both, but one of the other two. My 3DS is updating as I type this soooooo, well see how that goes. I’ve already had a few freezes where it will start to update and then stop, but don’t loose hope. It’s taken me about 10 tries for mine to update.

I had the same issue, just went onto nintendo and changed my DNS

    Hope it helps
