Will there be Nintendo sequels on Wii?

I’m not sure if it was the GameCube’s sales figures that dictated this, but it seems like a lot of first party Nintendo games only got one entry on that console. Pikmin and Metroid being the few exceptions, mega-hits on the GameCube like the Smash Bros, Super Mario, and Mario Kart franchises seemed to be primed for at least one sequel. Was this a quality control choice by Nintendo? Were these titles too sacred?
Now we have Wii. In just over a year, this new system has sold nearly as well as the GameCube did in six. Early in its life, the system has already gotten Zelda, Super Mario, and Metroid games. Smash Bros Brawl is out next month and Mario Kart is just around the corner. Will any of these flagship titles get another chance to shine during the Age Of Wii? Do we need another Smash Bros game in a few years?

Nope. We dont need another Wii smash bros. They are a once-in-a-console-lifetime thing. Same with Mario and Mario Kart and F-Zero.

Nintendo tries not to saturate their consoles with numerous iterations of the same franchise which keeps the quality and expectations high.

I just don’t see the point of another Smash Bros. for Wii. It seems like it’s going to be so full of content, that I don’t know what else they could do. Negotiate for more third party characters? I think the most they could do would be some DLC (yes, please!) But there has to be another Zelda for Wii. One built from the ground up for Wii, not shoehorned in from GameCube. I think it would be a mistake for them to bring out another Mario too quickly, but could see it happening towards the end of Wii’s life cycle. I really wouldn’t expect another Metriod for a while, though because I think Retro wants to take a break from Metroid.

I think we will see another Zelda and possibly a metroid. I don’t think Nintendo wants to try and make another mario game to compete with galaxy and I sincerely hope they don’t make a second smash bros on the wii. That would just be silly.

Marios? No. Paper Mario Was pretty good, and Galaxy, is out of the… umm galaxy.
Mario Kart… maybe, who knows
Now Zelda. definitely! TP was just the tip of the iceberg Nintendo can create with a Zelda Wii… Galaxy quality (or better) graphics, awesome dueling, improving and polishing everything else, and Nintendo may even have a game to de-throne OoT

Another Smash? I doubt Sakurai is interested-reason why he parted ways with Nintendo, before coming back for one last game.
Do we need another one? Not this gen.
Another Mario? I think it is possible. Same engine, more ideas.
Zelda? You mean a REAL Wii Zelda. Of course.
Mario Kart? Why? Hummers added?
Metroid? Doubt it.
Other older franchises? Of course.
New IP’s by Nintendo EAD? Probably one or two, if you don’t feel like counting the ‘Wii’ series.
New IP’s published by Nintendo? Of course.
Since Nintendo is now in a position of power/control, they don’t have to worry too much about moving on to games for their next console, and can focus their efforts on this one.
Also, I expect a lot of WiiWare support for old/new franchises/IPs.
January 9th, 2008 at 10:36 pm
We’re probably going to be reminded of a few IPs that sunk below the radar. Like pikmin.
I would love a wii balloon fight.

I’d love to see a Wii sequel to Super Mario Sunshine, being that it was the title that made me like Nintendo, but I’m not holding my breath. I know I’m supposed to like Mario Galaxy better, but it just feels…. shallow, in comparison. Rather than eight enormous levels with multiple missions and maybe 20 minigame levels, we had a huge pile of tiny little levels with vast spaces between them, all sorbets or salads and no main course.
Certainly we need a “real” Wii Zelda, whether a Wind Waker sequel, a Majora’s Mask-like spinoff (more Midna please?) or something totally new since they said Twilight Princess would be the last Zelda game “as we know it”. (And then came Phantom Hourglass, which is pretty sweet.)
I doubt anything that hasn’t been released yet will get a sequel during the Wii’s lifetime. Pikmin 4, if it’s ever made, will be on the next console. Ditto Kirby, if they ever make Wii Kirby. I don’t have a lot of hope for a Wii Chibi Robo, but if there is one, it’ll be only one.
Animal Crossing is a once-in-a-console-lifetime thing too, and so are Mario Kart and Smash Bros. They don’t need to remake these kinds of games because, like Wii Sports, they’re so seminal and console-defining, and they’re not so steeped in story that they could benefit from a sequel.

We’re due for a Zelda for sure, not only because TP was a “GCN title” but because it’s tradition! NES got 2, then SNES got 1, then N64 got 2, GCN got 1, now we need another for Wii. =D?
Smash Bros. should be limited to one per console, otherwise it’d get too old too quick and there’s no real story. Plus they last long anyway; I’m still playing Melee.

Another F-Zero would be great, Pilotwings too. If Nintendo can wrestle back their DK property from Rare, an all new DK Country platformer, revisit the Tetris franchise, let’s see some Wii-mote enhanced Kirby, and for crying out loud, why not a new Punchout game? Rad Racer was a terrific games, but I think Square owns that. Of course, I’d love to see Yoshi star in a new game as well.
But above all else, please, please, PLEASE, Nintendo, revisit Luigi’s Mansion on the Wii!
January 10th, 2008 at 12:49 am
Mykie…
1. Nintendo doesn’t have to wrestle any DK property from Rare. Nintendo owns it.
2. YES! Luigi’s Mansion for Wii!!! Please!!!!
And I too think we will definitely see another Zelda game for Wii. Twilight Princess was really a Gamecube game, and they did say that it would be the last Zelda game “as we know it” (as Raindog pointed out). I like it that they don’t saturate their systems with too many sequels. I even thought having two Metroid games on the Gamecube was a bit much. I haven’t bought 3 because I never finished the second one. But I did always think the cube needed a second Smash Bros game. I always wanted them to make Super Smash Bros.: Nintendo vs. SEGA. My head would explode. And for the love of God, can they just announce Punch Out for Wii already? It’s a no brainer.

To answer your question, no, there will not be another Smash Bros. on Wii. Melee has lasted me ever since I bought it, as it has other gamers, and I expect Brawl will do the same. I think the next iteration of the Smash series will be on DS (or at least I’m hoping, because nothing would be more awesome than to carry around the best fighting game ever with me wherever I go).
As for the other franchises, though? With perhaps the exception of Mario and Metroid, and that’s a big “maybe,” I think it’s highly likely that we’ll see sequels of the other franchises (from what I understand, a new Zelda is already under way). I believe that we didn’t see sequels of Nintendo’s larger franchises on Cube because budget did not allow for it. They were focused on getting the DS up and running and saving all of their money for the big guns to keep them afloat (as in, crossing their fingers, living off of Mario and Zelda, and hoping not to go the way of Sega). Now that Nintendo’s resources (read: money) are practically unlimited, expect to see both sequels and franchise rebirths (Kid Icarus, anyone?).

I’m still playing the game cube smash bros I really think that one is enough for each console. I mean seriously how many new ideas can they come up with in like 3 years?
January 10th, 2008 at 1:50 am
“Nintendo tries not to saturate their consoles with numerous iterations of the same franchise which keeps the quality and expectations high.”
And just how many Mario franchise games do you think there are again?
Anyway, the most likely sequel I could see is the “proper” Wii Zelda. Other than that there’s really no need.
January 10th, 2008 at 3:28 am
1. a new Zelda made ground up for Wii
2. new Pikmin game
3. a new Eternal Darkness (think N owns the IP).
4. an Animal Crossing game
5. a new Luigi’s Mansion
6. some
7. new
8. IPs,
9. thank
10. you!

I think Paolo’s list hits the nail on the head for me. But I don’t think a new Smash Bros is needed. It;s a game that keeps on giving and I doubt there will be many people who will be able to collect every collectable, so there will always be something to do on it.

In adition to what everyone already said, i’d like to add that i would like to see a Metroid with 2D gameplay and 3D rendered graphics (like New Super Mario Bros.) with the control scheme from Abuse. http://www.mobygames.com/game/dos/abuse
Also i’d like to see more IPs where the motion sensing is more than a gimmick or minigame but the center of the gameplay. Wii Sports and Kororinpa where both great in that area, but at some point Nintendoo has to come up with an AAA title, that makes use of what makes the Wii special.
January 10th, 2008 at 7:06 am
Almost spot on, Paolo! Animal Crossing would be at a 2nd place on my list, though.

I like that Nintendo maintains quality control on their franchises. One Mario every five years or so…it makes the anticipation greater, the expectations higher, and keeps the 20-year-old franchise feeling fresh. It it this approach that has allowed icons as old as Mario, Zelda and Metroid to survive, IMO.
But given the different circumstances surrounding Wii, I see some new paths for Nintendo to take. And as for speculation…
1. First and foremost, there will be a new Zelda Wii.
2. Kid Icarus is coming to Wii. You heard it here first.
3. There will be another Mario, potentially a direct Galaxy sequel.
4. No more Smash Bros. or Mario Kart games on Wii; only one of each.
5. Starfox, Animal Crossing and Pikmin are 2008 titles.
As for Metroid…I’m not sure about Metroid. It could go either way. Given how well-suited the Wii is for Metroid Prime, I’d like to say there will be another Metroid on Wii. But considering that the trilogy is over and that Retro Studios has moved on to other (original) IP, I’m not sure.
I’d absolutely LOVE to see Miyamoto do something with Metroid on Wii a few years down the line, after other Nintendo franchises have been given their chance to shine.

I am really thirsting for some new IPs on the Wii, and I don’t mean Wii Calculus or Wii Log Rolling. I’m starting to get to the point, having played something like 5 or 6 Mario Kart games that I don’t care about the new one. I expect that the newness of a Mario Kart Wii game will wear off quickly, and once that wears off, I’m essentially playing the same Mario Kart I’ve always played. These franchise games are doing little to distinguish themselves from one another, and now that we’re on our third iteration of 3D graphics consoles, they’re all sort of rolling together. I’ll always enjoy Zelda, Mario, and Metroid games, but there’s a good reason these games don’t generate the kind of excitement as your Halos, Assassin’s Creeds, and Rock Bands - these franchises are 20 years old! And the 3D versions of them are almost 15 years old!
I’ll always love classic Nintendo franchises, but the newness is wearing off. Pikmin is a great example of the classic Nintendo formula applied to something new or different. Same with Animal Crossing. I want to see classic Nintendo principals applied to new design ideas.

I’m a big fan of MarioKart Double Dash, and the only thing i wanted back then was more tracks. The same may go for the upcoming Wii Mariokart. DLC mariokart tracks please.
1. New Zelda for wii, just like everyone else wants.
2. New Mario Sidescroller for Wii - much like the side-scrolling levels in Galaxy! Basically a “New Super Mario Bros.” Rehash for Wii. would that not be tight?
I’d kill for it.
January 10th, 2008 at 1:09 pm
I’m thinking the wii 2 will come around sooner than expected (say…..Christmas 2009 or 10) because of of a MUCH needed HD upgrade.
I think the sequels will come then.
January 10th, 2008 at 1:18 pm
I still hope for Metroid Prime Hunters Wii.
January 10th, 2008 at 1:30 pm
I agree with most everyone’s comments, but as Brian said, I’d love to see a Metroid Prime Hunters-esque game for the Wii, with full online support. That would be absolute bliss!
January 12th, 2008 at 5:54 pm
I agree with a lot of you, the new Smash Bros will be so stuffed full of goodies we won’t need a new one for quite some time. and multi-player focused titles always last longer anyway.
I love Galaxy, but i only want another ‘proper’ Mario title if there is a similar level of inventiveness as Galaxy had.
But i would like to see the Wii have a longer lifespan than older consoles which means some titles would need more than one iteration.
I wonder if the DS will see many first-party sequels in years to come?
January 22nd, 2008 at 3:08 am
yeah some games are once in a console lifetime but some games can return but in other iterations such as
mertoid prime hunters wii
new zelda
luigi’s mansion (super mario galaxy graphics)
another donkey kong game (no racing)
