Eternal Darkness sequel Nintendo exclusive?

Thursday, May 17th, 2007 at 8:40am by Blake

Eternal DarknessEternal Darkness sequel? This must have slipped under my radar last summer but I stumbled upon the following intel while working on another article this week. Behold, my copy and paste skills attack once again!

Wikipedia: Denis Dyack, designer of “Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem” and Too Human, said “absolutely yes” in July 2006 regarding the question of a possible sequel to Eternal Darkness in his Too Human IGN blog. He stated that Silicon Knights intended for Eternal Darkness to be a stand-alone game, but the company have always intended to make more games set in the Eternal Darkness universe involving the Ancients. A sequel has been announced but not the platform it will be released on. However, the game’s end credits clearly state “ALL rights including the copyrights of Game, Scenario, Music, and Program reserved by NINTENDO” which confirms that Nintendo owns the rights to any sequels based on the first Eternal Darkness. It is also worth noting that some mainstream stores such as Wal-Mart have been stocked with new copies of Eternal Darkness as of March 2007, albeit at the original 2002 release price.

Mmmm, Eternal Darkness. How I loved that game. Crazy it’s still getting stocked five years since its initial availability.

If Nintendo is smart, they should buy the exclusive rights to that game. One of my favorite games from the GameCube era.

    Please make a sequel.

I’ve never played a game three times in a row before, one right after the other. Sure it was to see the “real” ending, but it was fun as hell and I got to see all the sanity effects.

ED is one of the greatest games ever made. i’d pre-order a sequel.

I don’t care which system it comes out, as long as there is a sequel made at some point. ED is one of the greatest games ever made, and it’s a shame it wasn’t received better commercially.

Hah, I finally just bought that game, and it’s awesome. I have to finish it, but I’m sure I’d love a sequel.

KillerHeroes: Nintendo doesn’t need to buy the exclusive rights to Eternal Darkness or any of its sequels: as Blake pointed out, they OWN them already!

Now, if they want to SELL them to another platform, that’s another issue…

I don’t think that “ALL rights including the copyrights of Game, Scenario, Music, and Program reserved by NINTENDO” means anything about future games, I pretty sure it those only extend to the original and no further.
