Crave says the original Game Boy is the toughest consumer electronic device ever made. From the article:

There’s no two ways about it: the original Game Boy is one of the hardest gadgets ever conceived. Rumour has it this beige behemoth isn’t made of plastic, but from the skulls of fallen Gurkhas. If you ever saw one that was broken, it’s because it lost a boxing match with a nuclear bomb — on points.

He was a tough little booger.

The screen, however, had a tendency to start losing entire lines along the sides late in life. It was like widescreen, but on the sides. Oh, and it sucked.

In Nintendo World, New York, they have a Game Boy that survived a landmine in Korea…it was playing tetris.

  4. Yeah, mine’s screen got messed up while it was in storage for a few months. No outside force affected it… it was just sitting in a box on the shelf… but when I opened the box and powered it up again, those terrible lines in the screen. It was so disheartening I never turned the thing back on again.

My nephews screen got so messed up it was completely unplayable… there were several wide bands of missing pixels through the middle of the screen.

Seems like a pretty widespread screen failure to me… but I haven’t seen any facts or figures on the screen-failure rate.

The Gameboy Color was a very sturdy piece of equipment; my friend had a pond in his backyard, and his Gameboy spent probably a total of about four hours two feet underwater, and it worked fine afterwards.

I used to take mine to school fights and knocked a few teeth out… and played teenage mutant ninja turtles later… good times…

@Stan I believe it was a bombed out bunker during the first Gulf War not a landmine in Korea
