Female gamers dominate Nintendo systems

Wednesday, October 10th, 2007 at 11:02am by Jack

Girls and NintendoI went back into the Nintendo press conference notes for a second look this morning and found something that surprised me. And it’s about girls, so I hope you’re sitting down.

What I found was that according to a Nintendo survey in Japan (so take it with a grain of salt), for each household the DS has 3.0 users and the Wii has 3.5 users. The DS has a 53% female user base and the Wii has a 51% female user base.

There are more girls playing these things than boys?! I actually think that’s pretty awesome. No wonder the the Old Guard feels so threatened! Next stop, a female president!

I also took an informal survey this morning of my own immediate family and friends and it broke down to roughly 50/50. There could be something to this.

My personal survey of video game players found the split to be:

    55% female
    45% male

BUT! The majority of the males have a female game player in the house who probably wouldn’t play games if the male hadn’t bought a system.

Not surprising at all, especially in Japan.

    Well, I feel slightly emasculated.

If that female president is Hillary Clinton, no thanks.

For me the numbers are roughly the same. But like David above those females wouldn’t of been playing the Wii had the male in the house purchased the machine. (Except for one household)

most men are nerds (for every 9 nerds theres one cool guy), women are not (for every 40 women, there is 1 nerd chick). the Wii and the DS are not consoles for nerds. do the math.

Funny how that one chick always end up doing podcasts… lol

My calculations based on the Everybody Votes channel answers for US national questions shows that the voting population is only 20-25% female.

I suspect they are counting “players” rather loosely in this study, and that many of them are not into it enough to be using channels like Everybody Votes; they are only joining in for party games initiated by the more frequent Wii player in the household. Nevertheless, even 20-25% is pretty amazing, and probably higher than any system in a long while.
