Reggie promises second half lineup, big surprise for “gamers” at E3

Sunday, March 16th, 2008 at 12:10pm by Jack

reggie e3 nintendoThe Nintendo lineup for the first half of 2008 is pretty well known. Wii Fit, Mario Kart Wii, Super Smash Bros. Brawl… oh, and there’s that DS thing too, which continues to sell in spite of the fact that I don’t think there are any more people left to buy the thing. NPD numbers say I’m wrong, of course, but still… 500k in February? The month is videogame doldrums as far as I’m concerned.

But what of that mysterious period after June? That’s been an unknown to this point, and already the punditry is ramping up speculation that the second half of the year will bring about the infamous Nintendo Drought.

But wait. What’s this? Reggie is dropping hints like I drop Infendo readers in online Smash Bros. Brawl? So he is, and it appears as though E3 is where he’ll put the smack down this year.

Reggie confirmed to Game Trailers TV that the second half Nintendo lineup arrives in June to coincide with E3, where the company is sure to have demo kiosks of games it has already released, Wii Fit stations, and this…

When asked if the orchestra conductor demo from E3 2006 would make an appearance, Reggie said “Who knows? Maybe that’s one of the things we’ll talk about at E3.” He similarly dodged a Donkey Kong Wii question.

Fils-Aime said that Nintendo’s post-E3 releases will be “maximizing all of our key franchises,” teasing something the hardcore userbase will be frothing over. F-Zero? Pilotwings? Something Zelda-related? What is it?!

Reggie was cagey. “There’s gonna be a big game for the holiday that the gamers will want,” he said. “All I can tell you is what we announce during E3 is gonna be fantastic. The gamer is gonna be excited and the expanded audience is gonna be excited.”

Could it be the big game Factor 5 is allegedly working on right now? Kid Icarus Wii? Dare I say, a completely original game from Nintendo? Something wildly different? A new accessory?

The mind boggles.

So uh… Gaming journalism now merely consists of searching Wikipedia? What a pathetic excuse for an article! If you look at Nintendo’s past it’s a bad sign when new releases are spread out through the year, and lately we’ve been getting a steady stream of new first party games… It might lead you to believe that Nintendo’s got 2008 packed with new content. Real gaming journalists like the boys at IGN have actually spoken to industry professionals and have hinted at cool stuff heading our way.

Keep in mind one of the most hyped games of the decade JUST RELEASED last week! GO PLAY IT!

Kirby, Pilotwings, F-Zero, Pikmin, Kid Icarus, Donkey Kong, Animal Crossing, Wave Race? …. the possibilities are endless …. they need to narrow it down a little bit for us. I don’t even want to waste my energy speculating at this point :P

But I’m sure there’s something in the works. They would be stupid not to release something big for the holidays.

I think E3 is going to be huge for Nintendo this year. And at the top of their announcements will be a new Kid Icarus for Wii.

  11. Lifeisaglitch says...

Derek called it! Kid Icarus mark my words all the signs point to it.

I want to say that it’s gonna be Animal Crossing Wii. But I hope it’s an ACTUAL TRUE SEQUEL to Super Mario RPG from back on the SNES. Nintendo REALLY NEEDS that! Either that or an all star Nintendo RPG for Wii

I don’t understand how it is that the second-half lineup “arrives in June to coincide with E3″ when E3 takes place starting July 15.

Excite Bike vs Excite Truck (w/ online of course)

A sequel to Red Alarm from the Virtual Boy on Wii. Confirmed.

When trying to guess what Reggie means, you can’t think of the core audience so much as the newly established casual gamer. Honestly, although Animal Crossing Wii came to mind when reading the article and listening to the podcast debate, I feel whatever Nintendo has up their sleeves, it will surprise us all.

  17. Daniel Primed says...

I suspect more Mario spin offs and one or two franchise reserections. Nintendo clearly have something up their sleave. I wouldn’t be fooled that it is a game intended for the ‘core’ audience through. Could quite possibly be more balance board or something ompletely new.

Awww, I would CRY for Pikmin on the Wii… it will be perfect for the console WHEN it happens!

  19. InvisibleMan says...

I second the motion: Animal Crossing MMO!!

(Although Pikmin would be extra nice, too!)

  20. Atlantis1982 says...

I think its something that we are not going to expect, or already expected. Yes, I’m referring to you: Disaster: Day of Crisis.

  21. Andrew G. says...

Although Pikmin 3 is not likely to elicit any kind of amazing response, that’s what I’m waiting for (and I have a feeling it’ll be out during this year’s holiday season, though it won’t be the “big, amazing” project that Reggie speaks of).

Whatever it is, I can’t wait. Should be interesting!

And I hope we hear rumblings on the next Zelda this year, but I don’t count on it.

  22. Clonester says...

I’d love to see the Mario Galaxy team do a new Donkey Kong platformer. Or… a Yoshi platformer!!!

  23. Paul says...

    So far away…

Publishers new found reluctance to talk about anything post e3 until e3 is really grating. The fact that e3 is now happening in July makes it so much worse.

  24. Shivy says...

It’s going to be Pilotwings Wii, that’s my theory.
