Iwata dishes on Nintendo; disses Wii/DS critics

In a report by GameSpot, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata responded to continued Wii shortages some 6 months after it’s launch and defending Wii/DS and “next-gen” systems: “It looks like some people are (saying) Nintendo is not incorporating state-of-the-art technologies into its products,” Iwata said. “We are using state-of-the-art technologies to realize the compact-size Wii console with low power consumption.”
No mention of motion controls and snazzy DS controls, Iwata? Depending on your definition of state of the art, that’s got to be at least innovative when applied to video games. But alas, the real issue is that a majority of people only view state of the art as high-end graphics and processing power. That’s short sighted.

DS and Wii definitely use state-of-the-art technology, just not the kind that still costs hundreds of dollars to incorporate in each console…

Saying only high end graphics equals “next gen” is short sighted….but I still believe several of the criticisms of the Wii are valid, and declaring that just because it has a new control scheme makes it “revolutionary” is just as silly.
I don’t think anyone cares if the graphics are as good as the 360 or PS3, but I do believe most of us still expected it to have noticiably better graphics than the GC. So far that hasn’t happened, not even close and in most games the graphics are actually worse. I refuse to believe that Nintendo “had” to do this, that’s just a copout by Nintendo. If the Wii IS more powerful than the GC, it’s time to start proving it. Until then, the label “A Gamecube with a new control scheme” unfortunately fits. And yes, this goes to 3rd party developers as well, stop being lazy and doing PS2 ports.
