The 2008 Game Developers Conference has honored Nintendo with a Game Developers Choice Award.

The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass for Nintendo DS won for Best Handheld Game of the Year. The game continues to enjoy strong momentum in the U.S., with more than 1.1 million copies sold since its Oct. 1, 2007, release.

Nintendo received nominations in three categories: Best Game of the Year (Super Mario Galaxy), Best Handheld Game of the Year (The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass), and Best Game Design (Super Mario Galaxy). The awards were presented during an annual ceremony the night of Feb. 20, 2008, at the Moscone Convention Center in San Francisco. The awards are among the highest honors in game development, acknowledging excellence in game creation.

I got this for Christmas, played it for a few weeks, and then it got pushed to the side by Advance Wars, Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga and even a resurgence of Puzzle Quest, which I acquired in December for $15 and still can’t get enough of (random system-freezing bugs aside). Am I getting tired of Zelda? I dunno. Maybe I’m just not a fan of this version of Zelda on the handheld. Maybe there are just too many games to play right now.

I’ve seen (and experienced) that same sentiment from a number of different people regarding this Zelda title. I just don’t think it has quite the punch of other Zelda games.

I played straight through Zelda PH and was bummed to see how short it was. It’s one of the few Zelda games in recent times that I’ve picked up to play again after defeating it. It is a handheld game for sure and feels “thin” after playing through Zelda TP but I find it fun to play all the same.

Phantom Hourglass is good. But by no means is it anywhere near as captivating as Twilight Princess, nor as charming as Wind Waker. Which further proves my view that the best, “true” Zelda games are the console ones. The handheld games just don’t do it for me.

One of my favorite Zelda title is Link’s Awakening, actually.

@Derek B. Well I don’t agree with you, one of the best Zelda of all time was the first Zelda on Gameboy. The adventure was epic, the game was very long and the story impressive (maybe the best). A game that makes you wonder if you should really finish it because “the world you’re in might disappear if you do so” can only be legendary.

    My top 3:

    - A link to the past (SNES)
    - Ocarina of time (N64)
    - Link’s awakening (GB)

This game would have been perfect if not for the stupid recycling of the same dungeon over and over. I quipt playing rather than go back into that stupid (timed no less) dungeon for the 4th time.

awe it wasn’t that bad. i enjoyed it and didn’t mind the recycled dungeon so much (the timed portions weren’t that bad). i liked the customization of the ship and thought it was a fun idea. it indeed was short, but i enjoyed it more than minish cap and it was nice to see wind waker stylized graphics work so well on the small screens.
