Advance Wars DS gets serious

Monday, October 1st, 2007 at 10:05am by Jack

Like it, love it, or hate it, it appears as though Advance Wars is getting a face lift. The in-game stuff is still the Advance Wars of old, but those armies apparently aren’t being controlled by 16-year-old commanders anymore. Nope, now it’s Cloud-haired kids and G.I. Joe. Jeux-France has a few pics up from a recent show, but be warned they aren’t the highest quality.

Advance Wars DS

Brave new direction or accident waiting to happen? Advance Wars Dual Strike was one of the better pick ups for my DS over the past two years, so I appreciate a more mature look to go with my maturing tastes. That’s just me though, what say you?

Very happy to see this. Advance Wars is a great game, but I was a little disappointed that the DS game was practically identical to the GBA game. I’ll pick this up for sure.

It was always a bit weird to see these cartoon characters talking about war like it was just all pretend.

Advance Wars is an amazing series mainly due to its game mechanics. I liked the cartoonish style (reminded me of Bitmaps take on the war theme in Cannonfodder) but they cant go wrong if they don’t change too much.

I hope nobody is playing Advance Wars for the Characters, or god forbid, the story. That’s what Fire Emblem is for.

Either way, I don’t care much how the characters or tone is, as long as the gameplay is still unbelievably addictive, you’ll find it in my DS collection.

I loved the old look. Andy, Sami and Eagle were definite favorites. That being said, I found Advance Wars Dual Strike to be lacking. I felt the gameplay turned into waiting until both super meters were filled and devastating the other army. Not too much fun, IMHO.

I like that these new characters still retain an anime look. If the gamplay is as fresh as the first 2 Advance Wars games, I’m in.

Personally, I’m really glad if they dropped the pre-teen act. It was kind of weird to have my commander listening to his iPod while sending dozens of soldiers to die!

Best portable game series EVER, in my opinion!

Played the first two on the GBA and they blew me away…
The third installment on the DS didn’t. Hope they get back to basics where it’s more like a chess game (eliminating those crappy super-mega-devastating powers): right move at the right time or be defeated!!!

    Anyway, the new look’s AWESOME!!

The AW series has had some rad characters but they would be even radder if they were less immature. The immaturity in the AW games kinda bugged me a little. Plus change is good.

Hope it’s not to mature since it’s my nine year olds favorite game. He really likes the genre and I’ve been looking for others..

    any suggestions?
