Deep, humbling thoughts
Tuesday, February 9th, 2010 at 2:47pm by JackWhy developers today are too afraid (or too proud) to create a finely tune 2D game like Blaster Master Overdrive is beyond me. The game’s a $10 blast, pardon the pun, and the “story” consists of three or four still images at the very beginning. Case closed.

Because the era of 3D is here, and most third-party publishers would rather do it in 3D, which is more cost-effective, but I see your point, nobody hardly does make a good 2D game anymore. Which is a shame, cause look at some of the classics, like Chrono Trigger, Super Mario RPG, and Zombies Ate My Neighbors. But quality like that doesn’t come around like that anymore. Which is a shame. It’s just really a mindset of publishers these days. Not to mention alot of the new 3D games totally stink! Unlike the SNES days, where there were aLOT of good titles. I would really like to see more 2D games made, or even just republished!

I fail to see how its more cost-effective to make a 3D game as opposed to a 2D game. 2D games cost less to make and (when done right) can sell just as well, if not better than 3D games. NSMBW is evidence enough of that.
But otherwise I agree. Not every game has to use every button or feature a given console has, so why should every game have to utilize 3D? We can make games in 3D. Doesn’t mean we have to only make games in 3D. Some games genuinely benefit from using 2D as opposed to 3D.

Well, where I get that from is that with 2D games, each backround has to be made pixel by pixel, not just make one model, use it as many times as you need to, and the same goes for the figures, they have to make the movement seamless, and several times, might I add. But you’re probably right Mark, it’s probably around the same cost per game release, although games were WAY higher in the days of the NES and SNES then they are now. Chrono Trigger back then sold for $90! And NeoGeo games were normally $200! But yeah, you’re right Mark. And I do see my fault in my previous statement.
