Nintendo Spotting: Samus Aran needs help edition
Monday, November 19th, 2007 at 11:18pm by JackI can’t say I “get” cosplayers, but this one was making the rounds today and the effort is certainly there, and it’s Samus Aran, so what they heck. More pics — including helmet shots!!! — can be found here. Full disclosure: I made a homemade original GameBoy costume for Halloween in the early 1990s.

Hey, not bad! I’ve never seen one better, and she can even wear the helmet! And it looks like the visor lights up, too!

I admire cosplayers who really capture the essence of the characters they represent. I go to these conventions and a lot of them are like less than mediocre, but cosplayers like her really make it worthwhile. Good stuff.

What isn’t there to get about cosplayers? Anyone who wore a Halloween costume as a kid should be able to understand the impulse… it’s a combination of wish fulfillment, stepping into the shoes of a character that is often associated with fantastic themes and scenarios, and identifying with a fictional entity that embodies ideals or traits that the cosplayer finds interesting or desirable. And it’s fun to play dress-up.
That said, I wouldn’t be caught dead in one of those costumes, but hey, to each their own…

Sorry, I was looking at Samus and then all I was was Japanese School Girl pictures…
I want to see the gameboy costume you speak of. What was it made of?

Sorry friends, no pics. I don’t think they had cameras way back then. One thing, however. The title screen that I drew on the front of this homemade Game Boy was none other than Solar Striker, one of the launch titles with the system and the only shoot ‘em up ever developed by Nintendo. Gunpei Yokoi was the lead developer!

The suit would be infinitely better if wasn’t the stupid Prime 2 visor.

I’ll be her BFF.

I’m surprised no cosplayers have taken on the Fusion suit, I’d imagine that would be a lot easier to pull off.
Also, I’m totally gonna marry this girl.
