I’ll always be haunted by the NES 2, because I will never forget the day I could have easily had one and I passed it up.
It was 1995, I went with a friend to the local mall, which then was about 30 minutes away. We stumbled into the Toys R Us in the area, and I was going to buy a game. I wanted Super Mario World 2, but there was a stack of NES 2’s that they were selling for $50, the same price as SMW2. There were about 5 left. I stood there and held the NES 2 box for about 15 minutes trying to decide. In the end, I didn’t get either.
That was the closest I ever got to getting a NES 2. In fact I think that may be the last time I’ve ever even seen one I could buy. And I still kick myself for not getting it. I mean I had it…in my hands. It’s the biggest regret I’ve had in my video game life.
I’m not that familiar with the NES 2. Were there any games made specifically for it? Could you play regular NES games on it? If you could play regular NES games on it, did it improve the quality of those games?
dude this is a trip i haven’t seen one of these in years. in fact i had forgotten they existed.
@ joshdad yes it played nes games and that’s it. it was just a redesign of the original nes. kinda like the playstation slim, same system just different shell.
My idiot uncle stole mine, then traded it in at a Gamestop along with my games. He still had to put money with it to get an N64 and Mario Kart. I hate that guy. He should’ve just stole my N64 and Mario kart.
Both this, and the “Snes 2″ were selling for $25 at my local target once, both packaged with some great games – - I was too young to have a job back then, otherwise they both would have been all mine.
From what I understand, the lockout chip isn’t present in the NES2, so Famicom games will play (with a pin converter board, of course), but I’m not 100% sure about this…
Ahhhhh, the NES 2! I sure remembet this bad boy back then. I wasn’t really too sure about it when I first saw it. But all I can say is the only thing I liked about it was the way how it looked re-designed compared to the original NES. That and the way how they made an attempt to make it look like the original Super Nintendo with the way how the controller and console looked. VERY NICE!
I bought an “NES 2″ over tens years ago at a garage sale. Came with 12 games, the “dog bone” controller, a classic NES controller, a light gun, and all the cords. Don’t remember how much I bought it for, but it was a real bargain! Probably less than $40. This was the only NES I ever owned. Everyone else I knew had the original. I knew it was different, but I didn’t expect anyone to be interested in it! I was surprised to see the interest here at Infendo. I’ve never before heard it referred to it as the “NES 2.” As far as I know, it works just like any other NES, plays normal NES games, ect. Works great. I still play it to this day. Baseball Stars, Zelda, Super Mario Bros, Super Mario Bros 3, Duck Hunt, ect.
I have to agree with Resident Evil, dude. Last I checked, you’d be hard-pressed to find an authentic top loading NES for $75. Of course, stranger things have happened though.
@ResidentialEvil: No offense man, BUT ARE YOU INSANE?!! Why not pick it up. The least you can do is start an all Nintendo console museum of your own with a system as rare as that to begin with.
also @wideeyedwanderer: Only reason why people referred to this beauty as the “NES 2″ was because it was a remodeled version I think I recall after Nintendo had a price cut on the original Nintendo Entertainment Systems they were selling fast of. I guess it was an atempt to see if some gamers who didn’t own an NES yet, would this time go after an NES 2 and try their luck. Who knows.
i proudly display (and play) both my NES2 and SNES2… mostly for the “hey, what the hell is that?” comments. they go nicely with my playchoice 10.

Nice enough looking, but only having rf makes it kinda crappy. The red twin fami gets my vote for best looking nes system.

srkelly, I’d beat the crap out of your uncle.
Funny thing, after I wrote this I went to a local used store today and….that actually had a NES 2 for sale. For $75. I passed.
I remember the “SNES 2″ as well. I think I pass one of those up too come to think of it.
