Nintendo DS sweeps Japanese top ten

The Nintendo DS is unstoppable in Japan, and I’d be interested to hear if what has occurred this week there in terms of software sales has ever been recreated by a system in the past. Led by Final Fantasy 3 with more than 500,000 units sold, the remaining nine slots in the Japanese software sales chart are filled by DS titles. It’s really quite amazing, and I’d attribute it to the strength of the system and its software before I’d buy into any spin that the industry is hurting. Also of note, Nintendo accomplished this during the slow summer doldrum months when selling software is toughest. UPDATE: The link below goes to Gamasutra, which has the list.

I think the honor of ‘the whole top ten’ probably belongs to Nintendo back in the original Famicom days. Did Sega’s Master System pose much threat back then?

That IS amazing… and I agree with Jake that it would be an interesting topic (hint, hint, Infendo Radio!) to hear about overall record holders from ALL gaming consoles. Is this a record-breaking number of all times? Or just of this week?

I sifted through the weekly charts from the past two years and didn’t find any other sweeps, though the PS2 came very close once with 9/10.
The DS has been very dominant the past few months on the charts.

Gamasutra has the list. It’s a thing of beauty, even if most of the titles on this list will never see the light of day outside of Japan.
