Gambling with the Nintendo wi-fi connection

…In more ways than one!
So far trying to get into a Super Smash Bros. Brawl online match has, for me, been a complete coin toss. Once I had people ready to join a battle, the rest of the times no one joined, and before anyone could I was booted. Though the waiting room (where you get to beat up on the punching bag for a few minutes before the match) is lots of idle fun- my rigorous training never came to fruition! Frustrated, I tried to see if the watching-mode worked and surprisingly it does!
The main screen then shows you the participants of a battle (just their character choice, no stats or nickname) before a battle occurs and you are able to bet any number of the coins you’ve earned in other modes (which can later be used to get bonus items). If your choice happens win, you get a double-return! Of course this mode is obviously more of a diversion than a main-feature and it’s almost more frustrating to watch people play online when you can’t join in!
Having said that things could have been worse, I could’ve lost four coins instead of winning eight (thanks Fox)!
Whether my problems are a result of Nintendo server issues, a lack of players (doubtful), or my own lousy connection, only time will tell- but hopefully any networking bugs will be resolved before the US release of the game.

Maybe it is because you play the Japanese version in US and then get a bad connection?

Link- as Infendo’s Japanese correspondent, I do most of my reporting from over here in the briny eastern seas- my IP is definitely within the country so my location shouldn’t affect the connection… (. . ) Good suggestion though, I wonder if US import players are having trouble getting online too.

I cannot say I am entirely suprised and it may be a mix of all three. When Guitar Hero 3 came out, I had a lot of problems, but things stabilized several days later. I still occassionally run into problems though.

It’s HOPEFULLY just a temporary issue as servers are put online to meet the demand. I remember the DBZ3 game on the Wii had hideous lag the first few days I’ve tried it but it might be cuz of the country (Mexico), though granted I did play with another perosn in the same city as me so I dunno.

I just hope wi-fi issues don’t become a trend and are quickly solved. The service is free but at least it should work well.

If things clear up eventually, pelase let us know.

Do you always have to play 4 players when going online “with anyone”? Maybe the connection would work better with only one on one or perhaps 3 players…

I’m not sure about this, but it’s my understanding that the Spectator mode works by showing you a recorded match, so that should always work. Joining a game is understandably more iffy.

Yo デール ! How would you compare Spectator mode to online WI-FI matches? I’m dying to know. ;p

I would rather pay for good online, rather than iffy online for free. i dont think Nintendo knows the potential of lag free online. but i hope this problem continues. my guess is that when it hits north america, the problem will be fixed.
