$79 Wii at Amazon

Did anyone here get a chance to vote on the $79 Wii at Amazon? It beat out PS3 and Xbox 360 during the online retailer’s annual Customers Vote event. Only 1,000 units will be made available through this contest promotion to a randomly selected group of winners consumers who voted for Wii. It’s hard to imagine they’re going to sell Wiis for almost 70% off the usual price, but ther...

Wii Zapper is soooo worth your $20…

… thanks to Link’s Crossbow Training. It’s a great, albeit short game — most will finish it in about 1-2 hours. But then again it’s $20 and comes with a cool piece of thick plastic. I was initially frustrated with the third-person levels that require thumbstick movement, but after 10 minutes I was moving like a pro and rather enjoyed it. I earnestly look forward to pl...

Associated Press calls Wii the most wanted gift

From the article: Each holiday season, a couple hard-to-find toys send parents hunting from store to store. And, each season, they’re soon forgotten: Has your Elmo gotten any tickles lately? But this year, it looks like the gift everybody is looking for is the same as last year: the Nintendo Wii. Know anyone still looking for one to no avail?

Starting Nov. 23, Nintendo gives the holiday season a fresh blast of color with the launch of two special-edition Nintendo DS bundles. Each pairs a custom-color Nintendo DS system with one of the platform’s hottest titles. The new Gold edition comes with The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, while the Metallic Rose Nintendo DS comes with the “Best Friends” version of Nintendogs...

Nintendo Spotting: Samus Aran needs help edition

I can’t say I “get” cosplayers, but this one was making the rounds today and the effort is certainly there, and it’s Samus Aran, so what they heck. More pics — including helmet shots!!! — can be found here. Full disclosure: I made a homemade original GameBoy costume for Halloween in the early 1990s.

Happy Wii-niversary!

Happy Wii-niversary, everyone!  One year ago today, I walked into my local Target at 8AM after camping out all night and bought one of the dozen or so systems they had that morning.  I’m still surprised how much fun the camp out was and even more surprised that a whole year has gone by already. Share your recollections of the Wii launch with us in comments!

Is anyone remotely interested in Smarty Pants?

This was one of the games that had my interests piqued at E3. It came out last week, has no reviews in, and looks like a lot of fun. Bad trailer acting aside, anyone interested in this?

Virtual Console Monday – Wrecking Crew, Sonic 3D Blast, and Super Air Zonk

It took Nintendo exactly one year since the launch of Wii to cough up my most anticipated Virtual Console title, Wrecking Crew. Check out this week’s releases: Wrecking Crew – NES – 500 Wii Points In the days before Mario and Luigi became sports stars in their downtime between plumbing and saving the Princess, they tried their hands as one-man wrecking crews. With a hammer as the...

Review: Contra 4 is a cruel, loving mistress

For a few hours today, as I played through the first three levels of Contra 4, I was transported back to the late 1980’s in mind, body and gaming experience. For a moment, I had reverted back nearly 20 years into the immature little troll that had stamped his feet on the floor of his parents bedroom (that was where the NES was back then). Almost immediately, I realized I was using language s...
