I think that perhaps, when he was working on this, the Twilight Princess resources were not readily available yet. He probably finished it before he could even sample the game. Certain characters here come from pretty specific experiences in different Zelda games. As with Dan Shoening’s Mario artwork, he knows his characters pretty well, and he likes picking out his faves among the more obscure ones. Awesome explosion of a piece right here!
