World of Goo better than Zelda, Smash Bros, say collective reviewers

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008 at 4:16pm by Blake

I’d agree with that, particularly in terms of enjoyment, freshness, ingenuity, and music. Am I alone in that thinking?

    Chapter Four changes everything.

  2. InvisibleMan says...

    Better than Zelda and Smash Bros? Yeah, I’d say that’s a very true statement…

  3. ejamer says...

    It’s probably not fair to compare a $15 WiiWare title with those bigger games… but World of Goo is the only one of those three that I’ve been interested in enough to purchase (and would happily do so again).

  4. ejamer says...

    One other thing to contemplate:

    World of Goo - 7 reviews
    Zelda - 73 reviews
    Smash Bros - 79 reviews

    I can’t believe this game won’t be available for download on WiiWare tomorrow in Europe. I just don’t understand why they want to put it on discs so badly…

  6. NinKenDo says...

    For me what puts World of Goo over the top is the game’s sense of humor. This is an excellent game in many ways but I just love how it doesn’t take itself too seriously and after each level I can’t wait to see what happens next in this weird gooey world. Also if you haven’t tried the co-op yet you are missing out, it is great fun having 4 people all trying to coordinate these puzzles and it can be easier or harder all depending on who you’re playing with.

    I haven’t played it yet. I’m saving my Wii Points- sorry, Nintendo Points now ’cause of the DSi- for the rest of the Strong Bad games. I got the first two and got enough points for two more until I get another card. So…

    Heresy! Burn the witch!!

  9. WolfMark6 says...

    Yes you are.

  10. Derek says...

    Overrated.

    Of course, as the term applies to World of Goo, that means it’s still the best game on WiiWare and one of the best games on Wii. But better than Zelda and Metroid? Not a chance, for my tastes.

  11. yegman says...

    I just played the demo on my pc. Very interesting game and worth purchasing. Not better than Zelda or Metroid.

  12. daverage says...

    In all seriousness though, I don’t doubt the games greatness, but I do wonder how well it will be received on its 3rd, 5th, and 10th iteration….

  13. Fizz says...

    Looks pretty good…

  14. gojiguy says...

    I’m sorry, I simply can’t see a cheap, physics based puzzle game beating something as fun, long-lasting, and deep as something like Smash Bros.

    But I’m not really in a position to judge as I havent been able to play WOG yet. I merely say this because some Wii fans are just looking for some downloadable title to brag about and are using this as a way to vent their rage at Wiiware’s lack of quality titles when compared to other download services. It could still be great, yes, but let’s not jump the gun here. In a few months we could all forget about this game.

    Oh, and also, that trailer -sucked-.

  15. Sean says...

    Considering the fact that I haven’t played Smash Bros in almost three months and that I thought Twilight Princess was boring and overrated, I believe it.

  16. Ady says...

    I intend to get this at some point, but why would anyone even compare this to Zelda or Smash Bros? It has nothing in common with those games at all. Methinks someone’s trying to be controversial for the sake of it…

  17. Poochy says...

    @ Sean:

    “Considering the fact that I haven’t played Smash Bros in almost three months”

    On behalf of Masahiro Sakurai: Ouch.

    Mind explaining why?

  18. Poochy says...

    @Ady:

    “Methinks someone’s trying to be controversial for the sake of it…”

    That’s Blake for ya!

  19. Blake says...

    To be clear, as you’d see by linking to Metacritic, I’m refering to MP3 and Zelda:TP only, as have the other collective reviewers.

  20. GrumpyDavid says...

    That’s silly this is a great game, but while I am only half way through the 3rd chapter I can say it is not better thatn zelda. It is a very fun game to play though. Has anyone tried multiplayer? How is it?

  21. Ady says...

    @Sean

    Why does you not playing Smash Bros for 3 months automatically make it “worse” that a game you haven’t even played yet?

    @Blake

    So now it’s being compared to Metroid Prime 3 as well!? WTF? Again, what exactly does WOG have in common with those games to warrant such a bizarre comparison? Can’t the game just be evaluated on its own merits instead of being compared to a handful of 1st party Nintendo titles to which it bears no similarity?

    This is almost as daft as a bunch of 360 reviewers comparing Braid to something like Halo 3!

    And since when was Metacritic, a site that merely statistically aggregates rating scores the Last Word on anything?

  22. Blake says...

    I thought it was an interesting observation, one I personally agree with. If I could recommend only three games to Wii owners, it would be Super Mario Galaxy, Wii Sports, and World of Goo.

    Bears no similarity? They’re all video games, meant to entertain, so I think it’s a fair comparison. But if you think it’s heresy to call a downloadable puzzle game better than Twilight Princess or Smash Bros, so be it.

  23. GameGod says...

    @ Blake this a Nintendo site, Infendo, not the shitty site where you worked before, it takes more than gossip/shock tactics to convince the readers, remember that, your readers are not the HD insecure 12 years old waanbees, here you have intelligent weel-informed Nintendo players, wich means adults that don’t have to follow trends to be in the hive, here we play the games, we don’t use games or brands to affirm ourselves to the other cool dudes!!

  24. ejamer says...

    Love how the people most upset with the article seem to be people who haven’t tried playing World of Goo. Is a comparison between these games fair? Not entirely. But that doesn’t take anything away from how fun and interesting World of Goo is.

    @gojiguy:
    “…some Wii fans are just looking for some downloadable title to brag about and are using this as a way to vent their rage at Wiiware’s lack of quality titles when compared to other download services. … In a few months we could all forget about this game.”

    Wow, that’s a loaded statement. First, I disagree that WiiWare is lacking anything. It has just as much good content as either PSN or XBLA, and it’s getting good new titles much more consistently than either of those services. Second, you should really play the title before dismissing it as “Wii fans looking for something to brag about”. Finally, what downloadable game (for any service) hasn’t been essentially forgotten about in a couple of months?

    World of Goo has tremendous replay potential because it’s easy to pick up and play for a few minutes at a time, and because the simple physics-based gameplay means it is never the same twice. Frankly, I was a doubter initially… but playing the game was addictive, and even after finishing I’ve been repeatedly drawn back to it.

    Good solo. Good with friends. Good when you’ve got a few minutes to mess around. Good for extended play sessions. Even if the ratings are higher than I expected, that’s a lot of good in a $15 package!

  25. Ady says...

    @blake

    I never even implied it was “heresy” (please don’t put words in my mouth). I just don’t see why you’d compare a fun 2D puzzle game with an adventure game or beat ‘em up.

    Pardon me for trying to be pragmatic and non-sensationalist about it.

  26. Jeff says...

    You know, it’s tragic. Infendo is a good enough site to attract throngs of people without this sort of sensationalism. But certain writers seem to do it anyway.

    There’s also the fallacy that bitter, snarky criticism is a sign of intelligence. It isn’t. You don’t need to dog on popular games in order to prove how much more hardcore you are from the rest of us.

    World of Goo was probably best described as being “almost a Nintendo first party game.” this is because they followed the same sort of design philosophy. That being:

    1. Make something fun.
    2. Damn what internet forums say.

    That’s possibly as good a compliment as any game can get this generation.

    And to the trolls who pop in with “statements” that Nintendo fans “might” make to this article… that’s called a Straw Man Argument and is very weak. Wait until somebody actually says something crazy, mainly because not everybody who comes in here knows your previous position and will think you are the crazy fanboy.

  27. frstOne says...

    I don’t see what the big deal is. This is what sites like metacritics or gamerankings are meant to do, and I’m ok with that. Those games are competing for our money, so we need to compare them.

  28. InvisibleMan says...

    I think games like World of Goo, Braid, and Portal: Still Alive have broken the mold and the concept of what a “downloadable” game is. The notion that they are “cheap” for some people at $15 stems not from their quality, but from the fact that they are not disc-based and don’t require the money investment of shelf space and packaging. And the notion that they are “too expensive” at $15 stems also from the same fact: not having to invest so much in shelf space, packaging, and advertising allows for a wide range of depth in downloadable games, but it is all good as long as they are priced accordingly. $6 for Orbient is perfect, and so is $15 for Portal: Still Alive.

    @gojiguy: Yes, World of Goo is THAT good!

  29. Derek says...

    I don’t think Blake was necessarily comparing the games themselves. It’s gotten better review scores; that’s all he pointed out. I wouldn’t call it sensationalism.

    I would call it overrated, though. ;)

  30. Paul says...

    It’s a really good game for what it does, but it lacks the scope to make it into the great category for me. Sure, the design is extremely well executed, but at the same time it is a very simple design.

  31. WowItzMike says...

    I agree with Paul, but I’m not sure any game can compete with the vast empire of music in SSBB!

  32. Sean says...

    @Poochy:

    I don’t have friends over much and i’m “done” with it as a single player title. The online is so inconsistent that it’s almost not worth it. I had fun with it, and I really enjoyed it when I was playing it, but I haven’t touched it in ages. I should probably trade it in, but I’d hate to not have it in my library, it’s almost a standard to have the current Smash these days.

    @Ady

    Who says I haven’t played World of Goo? I’ve played it, I was even talked through the first few levels personally by the developers. I haven’t finished it yet, but It’s a great game.

    Bottom Line:

    I like Smash Bros, but it’s a game I played twice before. It’s become a Nintendo “Classic” for me, it’s always going to hold the status of great - but if I have two games I love, and one of them is something entirely new, I’m going to choose the new, different game as “better,” because I like good games that focus on new gameplay styles.

    And I just flat-out don’t like twilight princess.

  33. Morage1 says...

    @Blake

    I loved Twilight Princess. It was the definitive, epic Zelda for me. And I and hyped for what’s coming next! TT~TT Why the dislike for TP? And, personally, if you compare two games, and you think one is better all cause it’s new and different… It’s kinda irritating to see reviewers like this… =_= But whatever. Your opinion is yours. Oh and I’ve never played World of Goo, so I may just be a stupid, biased gamer. But TP, I L-O-V-E-D…. ^v^ Oh and I agree with GojiGuy: that trailer -sucked- =d ……. Sorry..

    I want the next Zelda please!
