ZOMG: Banana Peels!

Wednesday, June 27th, 2007 at 10:16am by David

kirbyslips.jpgA startling revelation on the Smash Bros. Dojo site today: there are banana peels as items in the game and they can cause someone to slip and fall. Sure, not every day can be a revelatory as what Zelda will look like, but banana peels?!

Would you rather see the Smash Bros. Dojo site pumping out daily information if it includes inane updates like this? Or should they just keep quiet unless it’s really something newsworthy?

The website’s a pure marketing device, not some press-release hot sheet or journalistic source. Daily updates on the site are designed for gradual, subtle hype increases and to maintain the public’s curiosity about the game without being invasive or viral. The banana peel thing sounds entertaining like it could produce a whole new game-play mechanic to itself. Either way, the game is looking absolutely gorgeous (the character models are fantastic) and with online play this could the final nail in the coffin for the PS3.

Good? Bad? I’m the guy with the gun banana peel.

Well, they promised to update every weekday. It can’t always be earth-shatteringly amazing. Right now, this thing is so under-wraps, that any information is good information, at least in my opinion.

a small trickle definitely helps keep the traffic coming.
Banana peels are new, though! With this and the sliding crates, it sounds liek they’re really pushing more player-induced horizontal hazards.

Didn’t smash bros melee had banana peels? all this talk about bananas made me watch to go watch Bud Spencer’s movie Joe Bananas. I’m sure that’s were they came up with the idea for Smash Bros Melee. You know what it is missing from that movie also? chairs. break a chair in someones back and that will add to the zany riot…

I thought this was more slightly more interesting than Zelda. We all figured she’d look like the Twilight Princess version and this is a new weapon. I actually quite like these daily updates, as long as you’re not one of thoses idiots who want a trailer every day.

Hmmm…. Zelda slipping on a banana peel… Now, THAT’s an image worth of an online update!!

i want cakes and soda in the game! No, really there is nothing wrong about banana peels!

    I enjoy the daily updates.

I play Smash competitively (gasp!) and visit an online forum dedicated to competitive Smash (www.smashboards.com), so my enjoyment of daily, often inane updates is in the minority. Most of them would prefer to see only new characters and only new modes, etc…

Melee did not have Banana Peels in any way shape or form.

Tiny little bits are fine, I’d rather tiny details than some massive spoiler. Plus it’s cool to feel you’re “in the loop” getting all these sneak peeks.

This is basically what Bungie has been doing with hump-days. They reveal maybe a new location, screenshot or weapon information every week. We just get something like that 5 times a week instead. I wish it would reveal cooler stuff like trailers and new characters (Zelda looks awesome) but any news is still news. And like I say: “That’ll do pig, that’ll do”

I am so tired of people complaining about the Brawl updates. If you look at Kotaku’s “coverage” (i.e. repeated “oh hay guyz they updated the Brawl website again”) you’ll see all they do is complain about it. When was the last time a developer had a site like this giving DAILY (sometimes more than once per day) updates to the fan revealing new elements of the gameplay?

I find it absolutely idiotic how many people have no qualms with looking a gift horse in the mouth. If the updates are so boring to you then stop looking at them; the rest of us will enjoy having something to tide us over until the game’s release, whenever that ends up being. Expecting some major announcement every day is just plain stupid and demanding.

To be honest, they have to try and give us bits of info 5 days a week every week until the games release, so im quite happy to see such small things like banana peels being revealed.

There is one thing they have yet to show that i really want to see though, i want some info on a newcomer that no one knows about yet, don’t give me pit, wario, zero suit samus, metaknight, or solid snake, but someone else totally new.

I know it wont happen for some time, so ill remain content until then.

besides, why has nobody mentioned the best part of this update.

so fari have only seen one site enjoy this update to the degree it deserves (have not been to smashboards for this one): neogaf, read there posts on the peel, they will show you the greatness of this update. the monologue on the smashbros site is always great, the banana peel monologue was hilarious, and the last picture was golden. why has nobody mentioned that last picture as being at the least, the best to come out of that update

If Nintendo were to tell us absolutely nothing until some big event, people would moan they wanna know about the game. Nintendo give us a cool site with daily updates and people moan that the updates aren’t meaty or relevant enough. I personally think the daily updates are cool. Regardless of whether we get a sexy shot of Zelda or a picture of Samus throwing a Banana peel. You’d be stupid to expect something mind blowing everyday,

Smashbros.com’s daily updates grate on me less than the raping of Halo 3 news and merchandise. *rolls eyes*

I think the website is awesome! I love waking up every morning and looking at a character profile, listening to music, reading up on a new item, or a new gameplay element, such as being able to walk around while firing a gun. So far my favorite update has either been the Gooey Bomb or the Special Moves updates (those are pretty sweet).

  19. slaverstrike says...

Well to me this update was funny. Before the banana peel, they revealed that Zelda is here again and an awesome legend of zelda medley. So it was funny when I was waiting for the new big update and I see a banana peel on the screen. Made me giggle a bit. And yes, I enjoy both big updates (like new characters and such) and small updates (like the banana peel).
